THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2001. Rev. Ross discusses Gideon Bible Society FROM LONDESBORO Jack and Helen Lee were the greeters at Londesboro United Church on Sunday, June 10. Doug By Brett Bean, Grade 8 student On Friday, June 8 Hullett Central's Grade 8 students had their grad trip. We left at 6 a.m. and stopped at McDonald's on the 401. When we reached Toronto we visited the Science Centre. There were many activities and things to do there. For lunch we had a picnic on the grass near the Science Centre. Our next stop was at Ontario Place. Everyone's favorite ride was the bumper boats, which we all got soaked on. There were many different rides to try. We stayed there for about five hours, then headed for the baseball game. We arrived early enough at SkyDome to watch the warmups, and catch a few baseballs. The game was really exciting and had to be decided in extra innings. The Blue Jays defeated the Florida Marlins 7- 6 in 10 innings of play. We arrived home at 1 a.m. We would like give a special thanks to Miss Uhler and Mr: Bosman who 'volunteered to go with us. and Cheryl Trewartha were the ushers. The service centered around the work of the Gideon Bible Society. Rev. Paul Ross spoke of the Bibles he has received over the years which are important to him. The King James version he received at church as a child, th2 one he received at ordination in 1974 and the Gideon New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs in the reddish cover he received as a Grade 5 pupil, were some he noted. During Old Testament times of danger, scrolls of books of the Bible were hidden for safekeeping. Second Kings 22: 8-13 is the story of Hilkiah finding the lost Book of the Law during the temple restoration. In Luke 4: 16-22 Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah when He reads the scripture in the synagogue. Hank Huigenbos, a farmer from the Bluevale area, gave a brief history of the Gideon Bible Society and an explanation of its work. In 1898 a salesman knelt to do evening devotions in his hotel room and mused that he could do this only because he had brought his own Bible. The Gideon Bible Society took shape when he and two friends began placing Bibles in hotel rooms. The Society is a fellowship of non- denominational Christians from all walks of life who preach the love of God and the power of His word. The members strive to distribute Bibles to all countries of the world to thoise people who have never read His word. The testimonials they receive from people whose lives have been changed after being given a Gideon Bible encourage them. Also they continue to give Bibles to pupils in Grade 5 across Canada. Gideons need the support of new members, prayers and financial donations. Gideon John Beardsley, the farm market analyst from CKNX shared the story of Gideon arid God's army with the children. God told Gideon to give each of his soldiers a horn and a torch. They surrounded their enemies in the night and frightened them so badly they tied.
