If you had to guess the most com-
mon reason for emergency room vis-
its, what would it be? - The flu?
Wrong. Accidents? Try again.
If you said asthma, it may be
because you or someone you know
are among the thousands of people
with asthma who have made a trip to
the emergency room in the past year,
because of their disease.
Asthma is one of the .most com-
mon chronic diseases, affecting
more than two million people in
Canada. It is also the leading reason
that children miss school and the
third most common reason for miss-
ing work. "
In addition, more than 500
Canadians die each year from asth-
ma-related causes, and it is estimated
that 80 per cent of those deaths could
be prevented through better educa-
tion and management of the disease.
A new asthma awareness cam-
paign hopes to change all that.
The Lung Association is partner-
ing with a leading research-based
pharmaceutical company to launch
The 30-Second Asthma Test. The
Jeff, Jeanette, Amanda and Matthew

test consists of five easy-to-answer
questions designed to reflect what
good asthma control should look
like, based on national asthma treat-
ment guidelines. If someone
answers yes to any of the questions,
they may not be managing their-asth-
ma effectively and should speak to
their physician.
"We believe that taking this test
w ill serve as a wake up call for many
people with asthma, helping patients
to better understand just how well or
how poorly they may be managing
the disease," said Bill VanGorder,
National Vice President of the Lung
Association. _"Regrettably, many
asthma patients have learned to live
with symptoms and limitations that
are generally avoidable. By talking
to their physician or local Lung
Association about the impact asthma
may be having on them, most
patients can greatly improve their
quality of life."
Experts agree that most asthma
patients can live life symptom-free.
But many don't realize that they
could be managing their disease
Funeral service will be held at the

MABLE RILEY
Mrs. Mable Riley of Blyth passed
more effectively and suffer needless-
ly from symptoms such as breath-
lessness, coughing, wheezing, chest
tightness and night-time awaken-
ings.
Research shows that nearly six in
10 are failing to control their disease
effectively — and are suffering the
consequences.
"We need to raise awareness about
asthma because waking up at night,
missing work or school, or requiring
urgent medical care need not be nor-
mal consequences of having asth-
ma." said Dr. Robert Cowie.
away at South Huron Hospital,
Exeter on Thursday, June 7, 2(X)1.
