Israelite troops storm Walton Hall twice
FROM WALTON
"Sentries on the hill ... what do
you see" yells Commander,
Cassandra Banks.
"There's thousands of them sir,
lined up in rows!" calls back Sentry
1, played by Karla Kale.
Brandon McGavin playing Sentry
2, and looking through binoculars
shouts out, "They look ugly..."
"Who are they?"
"Philistines!"
"This calls for the Army of the
Living God!"
The music begins and from the
back march in the Israelite troops.
For those who couldn't make it to
see the Rock Slinger and his
Greatest Hit, they really missed out
on a wonderful performance. To see
the Walton Hall transformed from
just a building into a desert scene
with palm trees on the walls and real
palm trees up front, and a backdrop
that was truly a work of art, was
really something.
One person commented that he
thought the play would be a "little
kids' play and he spent his $5 more
or less as a donation. He quickly
changed his mind and couldn't get
over how well done it was. There
were people wiping their eyes when
the sisters sang Friends in the Lord.
Both sang solos along with others
and gave flawless performances.
The nasty Philistines loved to
insult (on behalf of Goliath) the
Israelites with lines such as, "Verily,
I say unto you, you could sit on a
maggot and swing your legs!" Nikki
Van der Veen delivered those lines
Don and Monique Baan greeted
worshippers at the 136th anniversary
service June 10. The evening began
at 5:30 p.m. with a delicious potluck
supper.
The crowd then went upstairs
where they were entertained with the
wonderful music of the Melville
Crew.
Guest speaker John Beardsley's
(CKNX Farm News) reflection was
called, God's Faithfulness through
all Generations.
Special music throughout the
service was provided by the Musical
Youth Singers and the adult choir.
Joan Tuchlinsky announced that
next Sunday will be Promotion
Sunday and three babies will be
baptized.

and had the crowd chuckling.
Stephanie Rijkhoff, the other mean
Philistine was just as nasty. "Yet
again I say unto you, you are so
stupid you get could get run over by
a parked chariot!" The looks on the
Israelite's faces as they were being
insulted was priceless. A great bunch
of actors.
David's brother Eliab, played by
Andrea Van der Veen, introduced
him as his little runt of a brother and
as a shepherd and part-time singer
for the king. David couldn't figure
out why everyone was so afraid of
Goliath. So came the singing of the
song; Goliath of Gath "why he's so
big, he's on both sides of the family.
He's so big that when he bends over
we lose an hour of daylight."
Then came the song, Who will
fight the Giant. Excuses included
"I'm allergic to Philistines, "my dog
ate the battle plan,, ' "I fought at the
office".
"Anyone who wants to fight
Goliath take one step forward!"
They all step backwards leaving
David up front.
Michal enters the stage and is
introduced as the Princess. She is a
friend to David. She supports him in
wanting to fight the giant. He wants
her to talk to her father King Saul
who is a rather gruff and cranky
King. Well when old King Saul,
played by Graeme Craig, came out
and headed for the stage the crowd
roared with laughter. Mad at the
Philistines, his booming and angry
voice made a few adults jump and a
.baby cry. "I'm not going to take it
anymore! I'm so mad, I'll give you a
tongue lashing that will leave
scars! I'm so mad I'm sweating
lava! I'm so mad my dirty looks are
x-rated!"
David (Beth) started the touching
song, Every Shepherd Knows with
the others joining in at the chorus.
After the King gave David
permission to fight the Giant and
telling him that he had to wear the
King's armour, the actors all went
into the bouncy and swinging song
Dreising for Battle. The armour was
ridiculously too large so David fell
backwards into Michal's arms.
Now armed with only his staff and
sling David is ready to meet the
giant (he's big, he's hairy, he's ugly
and he's scary ... goes the song).
On June 2 at 6 p.m. Huron OPP
were called to the Molesworth
Convenience Store located on
Amberley Road in Grey.
A gas attendant told police that late
that afternoon a grey Dodge mini-
van had pulled in for gas. The
attendant put fuel into the van valued
at over $50 with the driver handing
over a credit card. While 'the
attendant was inside the vehicle
drove away. The credit card was later
discovered stolen.
Music starts and from the back
comes the huge, ugly, hairy and
scary Goliath (played by Jim Cook).
Harassing the crowd with his spear
and ugly looks he makes it onto the
stage where he takes on David.
The music crescendos and David
swings his sling. 'Goliath holds his
head, sways back and forth then falls
with a huge bang. Cheers fill the
air.
- The last song and dance takes
place, then out come the stars to take
their bows. The crowd clapped
enthusiastically and gave the cast
members a standing ovation.
Director Brian Black and producer
Patty Banks thanked everyone. Thea
Rijkhoff produced the posters,
tickets and ' programs. Audrey
Hackwell, Kathleen Williamson,
Brandy Leslie, Heidi McClure,
Gloria Wilbee, Marie Coutts, and
Judy Lee worked on costumes; Chris
Lee and Marie - McGavin did
promotions; Gloria Wilbee did
sound; Jack Clarke, Val Gillies
Clarke, Jim Cook, Geoff Banks and
Bill Humphries constructed the set;
Heidi McClure, Judy Emmrich,
Judy Lee, Shelley McGavin, and
Gloria Wilbee were stage crew; Neil
McGavin was camera man; Marie
Coutts,_ Marjory Humphries and
Peggy Humphries did back drop;
Joan Tuchlinsky was prompter;
Kathleen Williamson was
refreshment co-ordinator.
The Walton Hall board provided
the building and Duff's United
church helped with funding and
rehearsal space. Helen Brenie, Joan
Tuchlinsky and Heidi McClure took
tickets at the door.
Brian and Patty thanked the
community for all their support and
the young people for their
commitment.
Proceeds from the musical go to
paying off the loan from the church
and other bills. The money left over
will go to Rural Response for
Healthy Children.
It was an incredible time that I'm
sure no one will forget. I know that
some of those songs will still be
ringing in people's heads.
Thanks to Brian who spent many
hours working with the youth,
teaching them-the songs, working on
their intricate dance steps and their
acting.
Officers are looking for two
suspects. The first, the driver, is a
white male in his early 20s with a
skinny build. He is unshaven and has
several tattoos. The second, a white
female, long brown hair pulled back
in a pony tail.
Officers are following up on
several leads in the investigation.
