Lawn bowling season begins

The Brussels Tigers evened their
record at one win, one loss with a
home victory over the Zurich
Rangers in Huron County Fastball

The home side opened the scoring
in the bottom of the first. Moe Pipe
led off with a double to left and three
batters later Doug Shaw cashed him
with a bloop double.
The Tigers added to their lead in
the second as Steve Oldfield scored
on a Shawn Thompson hit.
Brussels led 4-0 after two innings.
The Brussels U-9 I soccer squad
pushed its record to two wins and a
tie after doubling up Newton I, June
4.
Brussels got on the board first
when Gavin Bowers worked his way
through a crowd of defenders with
the help of Ty Sebastian, Andrew
Lindsay and Christine Bone for the
goal.
Good end-to-end play was re-
enfOrced by the Brussels defence
with Vicki Blake and Christopher
Becker clearing the zone.
Netminder Cameron Schlosser was
beaten when a Newton player came
in alone for a clear shot on net.
Brussels quickly retook the lead
when Lindsay hooked a shot around
the goalie.
Emily Prior helped out in front of
the net, kicking the ball away from
the attacker while Becker worked the
ball to the sidelines.
Schlosser made several good
grabs. including one inches from the
goal line.
A netter by Randy Zwep put
Brussels up 3-1 before the end of the
first half. He was able to retain con-

Zurich got back in the game with a
couple runs in the third to cut the
Tigers lead to 4-2. However, the
Tigers answered back in the bottom
of the frame with a couple of runs
highlighted by another Pipe RBI as
he plated Shawn Conley, making the
score 6-2 after four innings.
The visitors refused to go away as
they once again cut the Tigers'
Marissa Pipe and Emily Baker.
Sebastian went between the posts
for the second half.
Bone and Lindsay worked the ball
the length of the field, passing to
bowers for a goal. Bowers earned his
third of the game when he picked up
Lindsay's rebound.
Newton took the tally to 5-2 when
a shot deflected off the goal

advantage to 6-4. However, the
Tigers rallied and scored a run of
their own on a Higgins' sac fly, to
make the final score 7-4.
Terry Nichol started on the hill for
the Tigers and logged five innings
fanning six Rangers. Doug Conley
pitched the final two innings for the
save.
At the plate, Pipe was four for
four.
The Tigers' next home game is
Friday night as they play host to the
Exeter Braves at 7:30 p.m.

soon afterwards when he and Bowes
made good passes to get within

Sebastian made a great save as the
ball rolled towards the goal

crowd.
The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club
held the first tournament of the sea-
son, Thursday, June 7, with 12 teams
competing. Guests were welcomed
by President Bill Bremner and rules
read by Jim Coultes. Sponsors were
CIBC and Brussels Agri-Services.
Winners were: first, Wayne Wright
and Rita Hurley, -Fairmont Club,
London, three wins, 40; second, Bill
and Frances Bremner, Brussels, two
wins, 39 plus two; third, Cathie
Symington, Fairmont, London and
Ken Barbour, Brussels, two wins,
39; fourth, Gordon Bosman and Jean
Bewley, Brussels with Gerald
Gibson helping out on the second
game, two wins, 33; fifth, Ken and
Joyce Culley, Southampton, two
wins, 31; sixth, Ed and Thelma
Jeffery, James Gardens, Toronto, two
wins, 30; seventh, Murray Walker
and Gladys Cook, Stratford, twa
wins, 26; consolation, Helen Bryans
and Doris Waddell, Mitchell.
The next tournament will be held
July 5 starting at 10:30 a.m. spon-
sored by Susan Alexander, for
Maitland Valley Financial
Consultants, and Teeft's Knechtel
Grocery. Spectators are always wel-
come.
Anyone who would like to try the
game, come any Monday or
Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Wear
shoes without heels.
