This year's Showcase Home, on the corner of Hibernia Street and Avondale Avenue, was built in 1875 by Joseph Sharman at a cost of $4,000. Two years earlier, he had purchased the 75-acre farm from his brothers. Joseph later left Stratford to settle in Manitoba. By 1887 the prop- erty was reduced to a 3.25 acre lot and by 1904 it was its current half-. acre size. Joseph Sharman's father, John, was among the earliest and most success- ful settlers to the area. Stratford's first blacksmith, he also operated Sharman's Tavern at the corner of Huron and Mornington Streets. The home is a stately 1875 white brick Italianate home incorporating many of the characteristics of the period — elegant principal rooms, a grand staircase and sunny bay win- dows. Highlights of the home include the hand-painted murals and ceiling medallion in the spacious living room, the dramatic dining room with art deco accents, the library/music room with its beautiful natural wood mouldings and fireplace, and the sun- room retreat overlooking the private back garden complete with pond. Design businesses that have gener- ously donated their time and talent to Stratford Designer Showcase Home 2001 include Ar Works, Stratford; Bee Creative Design, Stratford; Classic Colour, Stratford; Cozyn's Garden Gallery, Stratford; Dixon Taylor Design, Cambridge; Five Green Apples, Waterloo-. La Cache, Stratford; Plus Fabrics, Stratford; Raintree Design, Stratford; Stardust Designs, Stratford and Strokes, Dublin.
