Sports Brussels U-9 rout Elma 1 It was a rout for the Brussels U-9 soccer team when they welcomed Elma I to their home field, May 28, Good hustle by Christine Bone and speed exhibited by Ty Sebastian put a lot of pressure on the opposing netminder early in the match. Vicki Blake was strong on defence, stop- ping a break away.- Marissa Pipe worked hard along the sidelines. A nice pass from Randy Zwep to Andrew Lindsay resulted in Brussels first netter of the game. Lindsay and Gavin Bowers paired Up for several .good attempts on net before Lindsay popped in his second from a sharp angle. In spite of good work by Elma's netminder to grab the ball. Brussels took the score to 3-0 when steady pressure by Lindsay, Zwep, Adrian. Menzi and Cassidy Peachey kept the ball near the crease resulting in a goal by Bowers. Zwep netted the ball minutes later when he lifted the ball high over the goalie's head.. Goalie Cameron Schlosser ended the first half with a shut-out. Lindsay took over in net for the second frame, making a save from the kick-off. Sebastian added two quick tallies to Brussels' total when he wound his way through defenders for his first and lifted a high shot for his second. Elma final broke through, beating Lindsay on a breakaway. Brussels added two late in the game when Bowers picked up a rebound off an Emily KerkhOf shot and Zwep handled the ball around an opponent and scored on a kick over the goalie's head. Christophef Becker was steady on defence while Emily Baker, Megan Miners, Emily Prior and Kendra Siebert worked hard as forwards and halfbacks. The final score was 8-1. The visitors came back with two beautiful goals from the duo of Wood and Rapson to tie the game at three. Patti Blake showed great stamina and determination, continuing to bat- tle after losing a tooth. . On Wednesday, May 30, the B Is met Newton in their first league game of the season. The teams were very closely matched, with end-to- end action. Brussels gradually built a three- goal lead on scoring by Adam Corbett, Chris Corbett and Doug Schnock. Schnock and C. Corbett also shared goaltending duties, with both keepers playing solid games. Midway through the second half, Newton scored on a penalty kick. The goal seemed to energize Newton and they soon added another marker, next level of competition, their time of 4:13.7 broke a 20-year-old school record, beating it by five seconds. Other results for local athletes. from the regional meet are: Kerri Meier, midget 100metreS, 13.2 sec- onds; Kristen Palmer. midget long jump, 4.13 metres and triple jump, 9.29 metres:. This made for a very exciting fin- ish as the teams traded numerous scoring chances. Bethany Kresky, Derek Koehler and Bradley Hill all showed good hustle, helping to cre- ate offensive opportunities while defusing Newton scoring chances. The final score was Brussels 3. Newton 2. On Thursday, May 31, the B Is met Brussels U-13, B2s in a game rescheduled from the previous week. Once again, this was a very close match. The B 1 s scored first on a long shot by Matt White. The B2s didn't let up and tied the game on a goal by Scott Somerville. The B I s edged ahead again on a goal by C. Corbett.. Undaunted, Palmer, junior triple jump, 9.66 metres; Laura Meier. junior triple jump, 9.95 metres; Vicky Black, sen- ior 'shot put, 7.13 metres: Devin Moffatt, junior triple jump. 11.15 metres; Rebecca Bruton, senior triple jump, 8.95 metres and Nathan Garland. senior shot put. 12.96 metres and discus 31.61 metres. Somerville of the B2s again tied the score. The game stayed tied at two each until near the end, with close chances at each end of the field led by the determined, hard work of the B 1's Laurie Grobbink and strong play by Kesha Bishop, Shayne Cochrane and "Petey" McNichol of the B2s. Near the end of the game. White. of the B Is, scored two quick goals, one on a corner kick, the other on a nice set up by Greg Bowers. The final score was four for the B Is to two for the B2s. Goal keeping was strong for both teams with Doug Schnock and C. Corbett •sharing duties for the B Is. and Wesley Kessel and Michael Dietz for the B2s. The Blyth Thunder had their toughest game of the season when they travelled to Lucknow to chal- lenge the Knechtel squad. In spite of good speed and position playing, Coach Don Nicholson, said Lucknow was no match for the speed. determination and, goal tend- ing of the Thunder. -Blyth: doubled up their opponent when singles were netted by Anthony Peters. Wed7406, 524-2424 Brussels U-13 squeeze out 2 victories Huron OPP warn about a scam that makes losers out of 'winners' Recently there have been a couple of reports of suspicious telephone calls in Huron County. Huron OPP say the suspects are making collect calls and asking for one or both of the residents by name. If the call is accepted, the suspect(s) claim that they are with the HAWK radio station and that the resident has just' won $10,000. It' the resident continues the conversation, the sus- pect(s) tells them to meet at a Royal Bank down in London to pick up the money. This is not legitimate. HAWK Radio and the Royal Bank are aware of the scam, are not behind the calls and neither support them in any way. Even more calls have been placed in the London area and the London City Police is currently investigating these incidents. anyone receives a call like this, do not believe the caller-and report the call to the police.
