Rain, cool temp.
impact wheat crop
Hall said fusarium in the wheat
could have a big economic impact.
Last week, wheat was starting to
head in cool and wet conditions,
high risk conditions for fusarium,
Hall said.
The conditions need to become
sunny and dry to prevent fusarium.
Hall is not sure how serious the
problem is, but if weather
conditions stay the same through
the beginning of June it could be a
big problem.
Corn has also become stressed
by the wet and cool conditions.
Some corn has turned yellow.
If there is sun, the conditions of
the corn will turn around, added
Hoegy.
The first cut of hay is maturing;
and some farmers have begun
cutting. According to Hall haying

''We need some sun and heat"
Hull said in a phone interview

The cool temperatures and vast
amount of rainfall in the past two
weeks could lead to serious
problems with the crops,
especially winter wheat.
Since May 21 there has been
63.6 millimeters of rain said Merle
Hoegy. of Brussels Agromart. At
first the rain was a blessing due to
the dry conditions but as it
continued to rain almost daily for
two weeks it became a problem.
With the low temperatures and
high moisture levels, winter wheat
is in danger of getting fusarium,
said OM AFRA alternate crop
production systems specialist
Brian Hall.
Fusarium is a mold that forms
when the head of the wheat is
beginning to grow. Fusarium in
the head of the wheat downgrades
the quality at market. •

Little Tyler Yates could hardly contain his smiles or enthusiasm when he plunked himself down
in a corner-of Memorial Hall Saturday morning and began leafing through a recently purchased
book. at Blyth Festival's annual book sale. The two-day event drew hundreds to the village in
search of reading material for rainy spring days, cold winter nights or that treasure hidden
amongst the piles of donated reading material. (Vicky Bremner photo)
