You farmed all your life and that you did enjoy,
Yoti've worked hard since you' were a boy,
You enjoy music, calling off square dances and
making people laugh too,
They say laughter's the best medicine for you.
Although you're not ready for the old rocking chair,
At least you can relax because you've had your share,
Of ups, downs, hurt, pain and all the rest,
There's no doubt in my mind you're one of the best.

Family pie recipe a crowd pleaser at book sale
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
The tantalizing aroma of freshly
baked pies wafts through the air as
hundred of people browse tables
overflowing with books.
It is an occurrence which has
become a tradition in Blyth as Lynda
Lentz McGregor and • many volun-
teers provide homemade pies and
sandwiches to the crowds which
descend on the village each June to
peruse the large selection of reading
material available at the book sale
held in Memorial Hall as a fundrais-
er for the Blyth Festival.
Lentz McGregor, the baker of
some 40 rhubarb custard and pecan
pies for the sale, says the whole thing
got started in the late 1970s when a
book sale was part of an antique and
craft show at the village arena.
Though the show did not continue,
the book sale portion of the event
had done very well so it continued
for many years, under the guidance
of Marion Doucette.
When it wits decided a lunch
counter would be a good addition to
the annual sale, Lentz McGregor
pitched in to bake pies. "For the first
couple years, I would get tip early in
the morning and make /five or six
pies which would be sold (by piece)
at the lunch counter," she says.
The rhubarb custard, an old family
recipe was a big hit. The pecan was
added in later years to give cus-
tomers a variety.
With the success of the pie sales,
Lentz McGregor soon decided it
would be a good idea to bake the pies
at the hall; thereby allowing the cus-
tomers to enjoy the smell of freshly
baked goods. Pies were also sold
whole, eventually boosting the
demand to more than three dozen.
Lentz McGregor says part of the
success of the event is the comfort
factor. "The food offered at the lunch
counter has always been the same.
People know what they will be get-
ting."
It is the contributions from the
community which also help the sale
succeed, she says.
"The same people and businesses
donate the same things each year.
People donate rhubarb each year. It
just magically appears. The same
people make the sandwich fillings
and the same people show up to help
in the kitchen each time."
"It is a lovely atmosphere in the
kitchen during the sale. It his very
relaxed: There is no protocol."
Lentz McGregor adds that the
book sale is a great time to cross
paths with those you may not see
regularly during the year.
"It is good community stuff, peo-
ple getting together to make the
event happen. It is one of my
favourite volunteer events.",
The Blyth Festival book sale runs
from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., June I and
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 2.
Preparing the pies
Lynda Lentz McGregor of Blyth begins working on three
dozen pies days prior to the Blyth Festival's annual book
sale. Her rhubarb custard and pecan pies have become a
tradition at the lunch counter.

Well, it's been two weeks since the
List At The.Branch because the long
weekend made my mind take a holi-
dLy.
The special meeting held on . May
17 for election of officers went well.
All positions on the executive have
been tilled and most of the Chairman
positions have been appointed. It
you wish to assist on a committee
just call the new President Glenn
Bridge or the Branch.
The installation - of the new execu-
tive was held on May 25. President is
Glenn Bridge, first vice is Rick
McDonald, second vice is Mike
Vader, secretary is Jo-Ann
McDonald, treasurer is Julie
Harrison and Sergeant-at-Arms is
Lisa Glanville. Executive members
are Gary Dauphin, John Harrison,
Gerry Wheeler and Mabel Glanville.
Friday night supper was cabbage
rolls. There was a really good crowd.
This coming week will be a little
different because it is the 70th
anniversary kick-off celebration
night. We will be having chicken
wings and french fries. Instead of it
being 'ready to eat, you will order
-your dinner and a waiterwiffdeliver
it piping hot to your table. A normal
$5 supper will consist of seven
chicken wings and fries but you may
order more and pay a little extra. The
wings are 50 cents each and an order
of fries is $1.50.
You can eat upstairs or downstairs
and there will be musical entertain
Ment upstairs during the evening.
The food will be available all
evening.
The anniversary committee and
special helpers, the PeeWee hockey
team, are looking forward to an
enjoyable evening that is openj to
everyone to attend. You don't need to
belong to the Legion so just drop in
with your family and have a nice
evening.
Euchre was held last Saturday with
II tables of slightly damp players, as
the pouring rain caught our Intenders
coming in. Shirley Dittmer and
Isabelle Gray played very well with
82 points. Second place went to John
and Iola Subject with 78 points.
Coming in third were Glenn Bridge
and Jo-Ann McDonald with 74
points. The lucky lone hand winners
were Harold McNaughton and Elsie
Mogk.
Sunday morning breakfast had a
good crowd attending. Next month,
there will be no breakfast as it is the
same day as the Firemen's Breakfast
so everyone can support our local
department.
The ''rsingles dance crowd really
enjoyed the music of the Country
Versatiles and the ladies received
many compliments on the delicious
lunch.
