Railway constructed to build link to Lake Huron Continued from page 19 in order to build a link to Lake Huron allowing a transportation sys- tem from the Upper Great Lakes and the west through Goderich to Buffalo and directly to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Erie Canal. In time the BB and G Railway went bankrupt and the Buffalo and Lake Huron Railway was formed as a stock company and completed the last part of the track from Stratford to Goderich. However, this line was not finan- cially stable until leased to the Grand Trunk Railway. At this point plans were made to construct the first grain elevators with a storage capacity of 60,000 bushels. It was in operation in 1866. The Goderich grain enterprise was a success. Disaster struck in 1897 when the wooden structure was destroyed by tire. A year later a new structure was built with a storage capacity of 500,000 bushels by Goderich Elevators and Transit Company. In 1905 the elevators were again levelled by fire. A new facility was built once again using steel and cement. In 1910 an expansion was built. The busiest years were during the Second World War. In 1978 the company changed its name to Goderich Elevators Ltd. Expansion and development is an ongoing process for this company. There have been many improve- ments and additions to the company since the beginning. Goderich Elevators Limited is the only public elevator in Canada and has 300 shareholders. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 20 at the Carmel Presbyterian Church in Hensall at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Dale Good whose topic will be the history of the W. G. Thompson & Sons Limited Company. The annual dinner meeting will be held on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in the Blyth Memorial Hall.
