Rev. reminds all to give 'beauty full' thanks
Such is the power of the piece that
' the art critic for The Toronto Star,
Christopher Hume says: "The result
isn't easily described, it sends shiv-
ers down your spine and brings tears
to the eyes. It is emotional as well as
physical, you don't just listen, you
feel you've somehow entered the
music." (Toronto Star April 21,
2001)
It really is a thing of beauty and
arises out to the gifts and nurture of
the artist who had the vision tctcreate
it.
The exhibit has been held over at
the National Art Gallery and I
encourage anyone who is planning to
go to Ottawa to see this amazing
work.
What adds to the beauty of the
Forty Part Motet is its setting in the
Rideau Chapel and I will now never
be without an illustration for the the
words of the psalmist "One thing I

donations 4:1, which means that a
$100 donation becomes $500. He
also said that with what the Blyth

by the time the government matches
it, 1,000 people could be fed for a

Beauty is in the eye of the behold-
er. Usually said when Jane brings
home John for the first time and
Mother is thinking that the grand-
children are going to be spectacular-
ly homely.
Beauty is only skin deep - comfort-
ing words to the teenager in the
midst of spots and puppy fat.
Handsome is as handsome does -
what your mother says when you see
the one who seems to get all the
breaks - and you are then reminded
that you must work for your rewards
and they will be more meaningful for
that work.
Yes, beauty plays a large role in
our lives - when it is made an idol it
causes endless problems and grief,
when it is accepted as another exam-
ple of God's grace it. brings joy, con-

Their topic was from the story of

The guest speaker was Doreen

tentment and, yes, pure pleasure.
Even the stern Calvinists were not
opposed to beauty and the arts have
been supported throughout the cen-
turies by the church. Most, sanctuar-
ies reflect a beauty, sometimes aus-
terely, sometimes ornately, but I
have yet to see a deliberate ugly
sanctuary.
Within the past month I experi-
enced the fusion of the church and
the artist when I was privileged to
see/hear the work of Janet Cardiff at
the National Art Gallery in Ottawa.
Her use of a piece of "church music"
(as my nephew calls it) to create a
work of art like nothing I had experi-
enced before was incredibly uplift-
ing. The Forty Part Motet reaches
each person in a totally individual
way and if you asked each of my fel-
low travellers to Ottawa how they
felt about the piece you would then
have four different answers.
The meeting was held in the
church basement.
Many of the members reported
attending Sister Marie McTaggart's
90th birthday celebration.
Sister Mary Lowe is at Braemar,
Wingham.
Election of officers was held.
Congratulations were extended to
Scripture lesson: Acts 9:32-42.
Rev. Ernest Dow introduced Dave
Hemingway to speak about the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank. He
spoke about the time that he was in.
Nicaragua when a shipment from the
Canadian Foodgrains Bank arrived.
He told how the Bank collects and
administers the movement of the
grain to its final destination. Some of
the crops that they work with are
corn, wheat, oats, as well as hay, sun-
flowers and barley. Besides the
grain, donations can be made.
Mr. Hemingway told how a dona-
tion of a $100 can feed a family of
five for three months.
ask of the Lord, this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house ,of the
Lord all the days of my life, to gaze
upon the beauty of the Lord and to
seek him in his temple. For in the
day of trouble he will keep me safe
in his dwelling he will hide me in the
shelter of his tabernacle and set me
high upon a rock. Then my head will
be exalted above the enemies who
surround me; at his tabernacle will I
sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will
sing and make music to the Lord.
(Psalm 27:4-6)
In a world that sometimes seems
drab and dreary we are called to
remember that it is a God given
world and we are to give "beauty
full" thanks. We may not be an artis-
tic visionary like Janet Cardiff but
we all can respond with our best
efforts in thanksgiving to honour our
Creator.
