ATVer takes season's first races
U-9s start season with a tie
In the hunt
A Blyth Mosquito chases down the ball during a contest
against Clinton last Thursday as the soccer and baseball
seasons got underway across the region.
Doon hosts
A strong effort by the Brussels I
U-9 soccer team resulted in a tie
when they took on Elma, May 14, at
home.
Elma got one by Brussels goalie
Ty Sebastian early in the first half,
booting the ball over his head, but
under the crossbar.
Gavin Bowers led the scoring in
the squad's first game of the season,
beating the opposing goalie with the
help of Randy Zwep and Christine
Bone.
Bowers and Bone combined for
the team's second netter minutes
later when Bowers picked up a pass
from Bone and slid it by the netmin-
der.
McLean leads
Brussels U-7
charge
On May 15 the Brussels U-7s got
the season off to a great start with an
11-0 win over Elma 1.
Derek Wood, assisted by Shae
McLean with help from Kaylan
Thalen, scored the first then McLean
plowed through with the next goal.
Adam Cousins scored from a throw
in by Ryan Sholdice.
McLean got this second with
assistance from Jesse Rapson.
Patti Blake helped McLean out
With goal number five, then McLean
on a breakaway found the net again.
Sholdice • scored unassisted, then
passed the ball to Dalton Hamilton
who moved it on to Wood to score.
Cousins unassisted, got the ninth
goal then McLean, assisted by
Rapson, drove one between the
posts for his fifth goal, then finished
it oft by slamming in number I I.

A 17-year-old Ethel native is mak-
ing waves on the ATV racing scene
this year.
With the first two races of the sea-
son under his belt, Grade 12 student
James Bank has placed first in both
local events.
Establishing himself as the man to
beat on the local scene, this June
Bank will enter the national level
with a competition at the SkyDome.
Going into the competition Bank
thinks he has a pretty good chance of
winning the event for a $1,250 prize,
as he has faced many of the racers
before.
"I race against them all the time.
I've beat them," he said.
Bank said that entering the nation-
al level will be exciting because
there are more competitors who are
really serious about racing.
The Waterloo Regional Fire
Services Mutual Aid Association in
co-operation with Doon Heritage
Crossroads invites everyone to the
ninth annual Firefighters' Muster,
Games and Parade at Doon Heritage
Crossroads in Kitchener, on
Saturday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to
4:30 p.m:
The event will be the largest gath-
ering of tire engines and other emer-
gency service vehicles in all of
Canada. Over 100 old and new fire,
ambulance and police vehicles are
expected to take part.
Traditionally, firefighters' games
or competitions were a test of basic
fire fighting skills and equipment.
The spirit is still alive today as teams
representing tire departments from
all over the province will compete in
games of water ball, bucket races
and ladder and hose races.
On-going demonstrations that
focus on public education and safety
will take place throughout the day.
Displays, firematic, collectibles,
great food, and a parade of historical
vehicles will round out the
activities.
For further information, call Doon
Heritage Crossroads at 748-1914.
Visitor parking for the event will
be at Canada Alloy Castings' parking
Bank credits some of his success
this year to a new ATV racer, a 2001
Yamaha Raptor.
This is his second year on the rac-
ing scene.
Similar to motorcross racing, with
ATV racing the competitors speed
around a dirt track over jumps and
hills. James finds the jumps an
adrenaline rush but fears them
too.
"I get a little scared of crashing:
There's some pretty big jumps,"
Bank said.
Bank sees no end to the possibili-
ties with ATV racing. This summer
he is hoping to travel across the bor-
der to races in the U.S.
With excitement in his voice Wank
tells about the 10 different classes of
ATV racing in the States and even a
ladies' class.
"It's really big down there," he
said.
Bank would be eligible in two

classes in the States, the open and the
pro-open classes. A win would bring
about $10,000 in prize money.
His interest in ATVs was spawned
when his dad bought him one. He
became interested in racing after
going to a track in Tillsonburg and,
seeing other ATVers jump, wanted to
get into racing. He practised and
practised until the beginnittg of last
season, when he started racing pro-
fessionally.
He says it is an expensive sport,
with costs for maintenance and trav-
elling. He has one sponsor, Cycle
Improvements, but the rest of the
money comes from his father.
Aside from the thrill of racing,
Bank enjoys meeting people at the
races.
He says his friends always ask
how he did at the races over the
weekends on Mondays at school.
"They wish they could do it if they
had the money," he said.
and Manitou Drive. Free bus shuttle
service to and from Doon will be
provided throughout the day.
Elma evened the tally when a kick
from the side got between Sebastian
and the post.
Zwep put Brussels back into the
lead when he notched a goal before
the midway mark.
Cameron Schlosser took over in
net for the second half, making a
great stop on a breakaway.
The visitors pulled even again
when another shot went in from a
narrow angle.
Brussels never let up on the pres-
sure with near misses from Bowers
and Sebastiain.
The game finished in a 3-3 tie.
