Review Entertainment& Leisure Madill's Drama Guild impresses 'Watt ta 941 Alth, Mary Justin Ruttan and Heather Sande delighted the audience at F.E. Madill with an excerpt from Mary Poppins during this year's Drama Guild performance held last week. With teach- ers not involved in extracurriculars the show was done entirely by students with the help of a parent volunteer. (Vicky Bremner photo) L t 1 11 1 1 11 11 II II -1 By Ashley Gropp Special to The Citizen The main auditorium of F.E. Madill Secondary School was filled with tales of Mary Poppins, a Jewish town by the name of Antevka, a school of talented youths, and more, for four performances running from May 10 to 12. This year, drama students at Madill put on their most, impressive performance to date. What was so impressive about it was that it was a do-it-yourself attempt by the stu- dents. Political reasons kept the school's drama teacher, Louanna Alexander from running the drama guild this year. Helped by parent vol- unteer Diane Hopkins, these high school students created Stars on Broadway which featured excerpts from Jesus Christ Superstar, Rent, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Mamma Mia, Fiddler on the Roof and Fame as well as original comedy sketches and a modern dance number choreographed by a Grade 10 stu- dent. The lights were first brought up on an excerpt from The Sound of Music with Laura Reinhardt and Eric O'Neil performing / am 16 Going on 17. The two performers held their own despite a small backstage distur- bance. Edelwie.s.ovas the second half of that excerpt, with Tyson DeBoer and a very talented Sarah Bestward playing Captain von Trapp and Maria. Next we were introduced to the vil- lage of Antevka, from the musical Fiddler on the Roof: Arras Hopkins came out to deliver the opening monologue that led into the song, Tradition. The complicated number was well executed and, the actors looked much at ease. Kendra Ingliti did a very good job on choreograph- ing both this number and the next, Matchmaker. The two scenes, although at very different points in the musical, were also bridged together very well. The voices and acting of Lauren Walker, Brigit Davies and Jenn Voisin as the three daughters blended well. Walker's acting stood out as particularly strong. From there, the cast and crew took us to London, England at the turn of the 20th Century to bring their ver- sion of the Mary Poppins numbers S up e rcal if ra g i list ic exp ia ido c io u s and Chilli Chiminee as well as a dance number to Step in Time. Starring Heather Sande and Justin Ruttan, this excerpt was particularly well performed. Sande, who also choreographed it, played a very con- vincing Poppins. The dance number for Step in Time was upbeat and ener- getic, and featured O'Neil, Kris Dorion, Heather Black, Brandon Ackerman, Jennifer Hall, Jessica King and Crystal Hiusser as the chimney sweeps. At this point we were brought back to the present with an exceptionally well choreographed and performed original modern dance number enti- tled Jiven'. The dancers were togeth- er and held the rhythm well. Choreographed by Laura Reinhardt, the dance accentuated the strengths of each. It was a very intricate piece without being overly busy. Dancers were Jenn Voisin, Crystal Hiusser, Vanessa Reinhardt, Arras Hopkins. C TO4 KEB TWIN CINEMA SURROUND SOUND STEREO LISTOWEL 291-3070 STARTS FRIDAY CINEMA I 7 & 9 P.M. The first half was brought to a con- clusion with an ode to the drama guild's past with Fame, The Musical which was performed at Madill in 2000. Gerth's voice bore the weight of Carmen's solo There She Goes/Fame with ease. Its closing number Bring on Tomorrow ended the half, leaving some audience members in tears. It was very well done and very well sang. Gelan Hopkins, King, Rosa 11o, Allison Dow, Ruttan and Hopkins were the featured singers with a violin solo by Jennifer Hall. The second half began with Hosanna from Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1970's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. A particularly strik- ing number from this excerpt was Mary Magdalene's song, 1 Don't Know How to Love Him performed with a strong, beautifully jazzy voice by Jackie Falconer. A duet between Falconer and Gelan Hopkins and Pilate's Song performed by Ruttan also highlighted the excerpt. The final two excerpts showed a fresh new side of Broadway. First, Mamma Mia, the new musical featur- ing songs of the Swedish quartet Abba,. Reinhardt shone as Donna, mother of the bride-to-be, Sophie (Burchill). Reinhardt took command of the stage and powerfully belted out the title song. Dancing Queen featured three extremely well blend- ed voices (Britta Hallberg, Sande and Reinhardt). Rent, a look into the lives of "starv- ing artists" in New York City, proved to be a powerful conclusion to an evening of entertainment. Both Gelan and Arras Hopkins showcased their voices in angst-ridden solos. The conclusion brought the entire cast out to sing together for curtain call. Again, the cast left on an emo- tional note. Scattered between each excerpt were original comedy sketches. Ruttan, Vanessa Reinhardt, Laura Reinhardt, O'Neil, Dorion, King, Hall, Hiusser, Ho, Jenn Wallace, Heifer and Tyson DeBoer brought their fresh and humorous skits to life. Special thanks was given to Mrs. Hopkins as well as to student direc- tors Vanessa Reinhardt and Ruttan. .1ap,p,v 35th anniaetaatv ti Dianne Check out our WEBSITE at www.northhuron.on.ca Congratulations Jeff on receiving your Inter-Provincial Licence as an Electrician.
