Rare display
Grades 4-8 students at Grey Central Public School had the
rare opportunity to see an endangered peregrine falcon up
close when David Pfeffer of the Canadian Peregrine
Foundation visited the school Friday afternoon. Not only did
the children learn that the peregrine is the fastest animal on
earth, diving at as much as 417 kilometres per hour, but that
the pesticide DDT and extinction of their main food source,
the passenger pigeon, in 1914, led to the falcon's near
demise.

The timely issue of animal
tracking from "farm to fork" is the
challenge of the 2001 IVOMEC
Scholarship.
- Senior 4-H members can use the
medium of their choice to address
this complex topic in order to
complete for a $1,000 IVOMEC
Scholarship to be awarded in June.
"This year, we're asking 4-H
members to address the debate about
tracking individual animals back to
their farms of origin," said Jacinthe
Moreau, marketing manager for
Merial Canada. "This issue is of
great importance in agriculture
today. On one hand, consumers here
and abroad find comfort in food
quality with these programs. On the
other hand, it does add new costs and
burdens for producers. It is an
interesting and stimulating topic for
our '2001 . 4-H Youth Scholarship
contest."..,_ -
Interested''4-H members can
submit a presentation of 500 to 750
words using video. audiocassette,
poster or written' essay by May 15.
