Speaker tells of El Salvador work
FROM WALTON
Manns greet
Jim and Mary Mann greeted wor-
shippers at Duff's United Church on
May 6.
.Joan Tuchlinsky called the young
worshippers forward and asked them
what they liked about living in the
country. What cold they do in the
country that they couldn't do in the
city?
Ms Tuchlinsky told about some-
one who was teaching math in a
rural school and she asked Johnny
this question: If you have 20 sheep
in a pen and two got out how many
would you have left?
Johnny's answer was "none".
The teacher asked him again.
He said. "none, you may know a
lot of about teaching math, but I
know a lot about sheep." Ms
Tuchlinsky learned herself about
how sheep follow each other. She
was coming home from Bluevale
one Sunday and slowed down as two
sheep crossed the road. She guessed
they must have come from the flock
that were in the near by field. Sure
enough, as soon as the other sheep
noticed that the two sheep had left
them the others had to follow. She.
sat there and watched and waited as
about 20- of them took their time
crossing the road and going up a
driveway.
Ms Tuchlinsky asked the congre-
gation for ways in how people are
like sheep, with God as their shep-
herd.
'A large mural made by the Sunday
School class depicted life on the
farm with its stresses and joys. She
shared with the congregation how
blessed she felt to be able to live and
carry out her ministry in this rural
setting.
When Matt Lee came into the
Walton Inn on Thursday, I asked him
a few question about his tremendous
job of designing the motocross track
at the SkyDome for May 18.
He told me that he had never actu-
ally designed a track on paper
before. A few months ago when he
found out about the job he went out
into his field and paced out the size
of the stadium in the snow. He need-
ed: to get a visual reference. The
amount of math that_he had to use ti)
make sure herhad enough dirt for the
track and jumps etc. was quite chal-
lenging.
He will need 10 inches of packed
dirt to cover the surface of the stadi-
um floor (which by the way is
Olene Dennis, Doreen Hackwell.
Marjory Humphries and Edith Wey
were in charge of the WUCC meet-
ing last Wednesday. The theme for
the evening was, The Earth is the
Lord's, which tied in with the
upcoming Sunday being Rural Life
Sunday.
Mrs. Hackwell read scripture and
with Marie McGavin at the piano the
group of women sang songs about
the earth. Mrs. Hackwell talked
about some of the problems of the
earth saying that people are called to
be stewards of the earth, but so far
haven't been doing a very good job
of it. She asked the ladies their views
on such things as farming practices,
climate change and how it is affect-
ing us, native land rights, genetic
altering of our food, loss of animals
habitats. etc. She asked if anyone
had any solutions. People _need to be
responsible in the ways that they use
their resources.
Then Mrs. Dennis introduced the
guest speaker. The ladies were defi-
nitely in for a treat as Mark Bachert
came to the front of the room. If he
was nervous at all it didn't show as
he told about his trip to El Salvador
last year. He has been there four
times already and each time he goes
he gets to practice his Spanish. He
can carry on a conversation now.
It is a very interesting country he
said and when it is cold here in
Canada it is nice and warm there. El
Salvador is a densely-populated
country with six and a half million
people in total or 700 people every
square mile.
Sugarcane is their major industry.
The cane is all planted and harvested
by hand with the employees making
$5 per hour. The roads are quite
diverse with some good highways
and even more poor roads, some
being a mere mountain trail. Then
when the rainy seasons hits now to
Sept./Oct. it is very muddy as it rains
every day for an hour.
His main purpose for going there.
along with others in his group, was
to distribute the Seed Sower (this is
an organization that produces pam-
phlets with Bible verses) texts, to
spread the seed of Jesus Christ to the
people there.
It was interestjng to go into the
city 'where they would hand out the
texts and there would be children in
the streets playing soccer. •
Not only were there children but
pigs, and some days cattle were
herded down the street. Every once
cement). It will take eight hours to
move in 4.000 yards of dirt. Can he
do it? This young man is somewhat
nervous, but excited and confident
that he will get the job done.
He will be taking a few Waltonites
with him such as. Scott McDonald
and Darryl Houston to help set up
for the motocross. We're behind you
all the way Matt.
It is finally here! The day that B.J.
Owner of the Treasure Chest. has
been dreaming of - Garage Sales in
Cambridge!. She left Friday night
and spent most of the day Saturday
shopping for more treasures for the
store. Make sure you stop by and see
all the special buys she picked up.
The first motocross race Of the
season happens at the Lee's May 13.
Riders from all over Ontario will be
participating in this event which is
part of the Provincial
Championship.

in a while a brand new four-wheel
drive truck would make its way
down the street.
The difference between rich or
poor was quite evident. There were a
lot of mud-brick houses. To make
extra money the women would make
tortillas and sell them outside their
houses. They eat a lot of tortillas,
rice and chicken. He got a little sick
of chicken and was anxious to get
home and eat some beef.
On Jan. 13, 11:30 a.m. the earth-
quake that we heard about took
place. He remembers travelling
down the road with a driver when
this woman carrying a child came
running and screaming with an
expression of fear on her face from
her house. Suddenly there wore 2(X)
or more screaming and frightened
people out in the streets and Mark
asked the driver what.was going on.
The driver jumped out of the vehicle
and Mark followed suit and the first
tremor of the earthquake hit. It lasted
for 45 .seconds and it was very terri-
fying. It settled down and started
again.
Then there was stillness. There
were fallen houses, mostly the mud-
brick houses. One in five houses
were destroyed. In another part of
the city the mudslide that was shown
on the news destroyed 5(X) homes
and left 1,200 buried alive. Very few
people were recovered.
Although Mark and his group did-
n't help right in that area they did
help in other areas of the city. Their
group helped clean up and rebuild
houses using concrete. In 10 days
they built eight concrete homes. The
people were very grateful.
One of the greatest experience for
Mark was the Gospel campaign,
especially the night of the earth-
quake, for in the midst of their pain
and suffering the people came and
were interested in finding God. To
Mark, that made his trip worthwhile.
He was thanked for sharing the
video of his trip and his experiences.
Edith Wey and Marjory
Humphries took over the business
part of the meetins. Following the
meeting the ladies enjoyed a great
lunch and looked at some of the
material that Mark had brought back
from El Salvador.
