FROM BLYTH
N. Huron
considers
expansion
of Bloom
effort
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen staff
Bringing Wingham and East
Waw anosh into • Blyth's.
Communities in Bloom is a project
for consideration.
At the May 7 meeting of North
Huron council, there was discussion
about expanding the program, which
has been done so successfully in
Blyth to all of North Huron. Though
Clerk-Administrator John Stewart
explained that the entry form is sent
in November for- the next year's
competition, Councillor Archie
MacGowan said the "groundwork
needs to be done now."
Deputy-Reeve Jeff Howson,
agreed noting the effort put into the
program by the Blyth committee. He
said he would speak to the group to
see how they might begin while
MacGowan offered to get some feed-
back in Wingham.
Blyth Festival's new production
manager, Dave Surette, has assern
bled a crew of technicians from all
parts of Canada to build the sets and
costumes for the 2001 season.
Surette, who worked as Blyth's
head carpenter last season said, "I'm
really looking forward to heading
the Festival production department.
It's a brand new challenge for me,
since this is one of Blyth's -largest
seasons ever, and it opens with the
spectacular adventure of staging The
Outdoor Donnellys."
On Friday, May 4 at the Blyth
Trinity Anglican Church there were
39 guests present for the monthly
get-together, while Adrian Vos deliv-
ered tour takeout meals. Being as
Mother's Day is just around the cor-
ner, the day was promoting this
theme.
Dianne Weber welcomed everyone
and mentioned that some regular
participants were unable to attend.
Millie Hoggarth prepared a
mouth-watering meal of chicken
breasts in sauce, potatoes, mixed
vegetables, and cucumber salad. For
dessert angel food cake with straw-
berries was available for diabetics,
while. chocolate cake with a cherry
on top was served to the others.
Helpers this month were Kyle
McNeil and Jimmy Ritchie. Guests
from the Seaforth Manor were
Charlene •Foxton along with Everett
Scrimgeour and Elsie Dismore. Two
extra door prizes were donated com-
pliments of the Manor. Mildred
Lawlor of Auburn won the first door
prize while Hermina Dyk and Ferne
Howatt received the donated prizes.
Anne Hulzebos was the winner in
the 50/50 draw and since her birth-
day is this month, she can treat her-
self to something.
Happy Birthday was then sung to
her.
Ms Weber mentioned that she
recently had received a letter from
Leah (the former convenor) who is
living in Prince George, British
Columbia. She is adjusting well and
wanted to let everyone know she is
still thinking of them.
An interesting story was read as to
how Mother's Day came to be. Did
you know that back in 1910 it was
considered a holiday? Later the holi-
day was dropped and the second
Sunday in the month of May became
Mother's Day.
A form from Blyth Festival was
passed around which had previously
called to see if the group would like
to attend a performance. Anyone
"Veteran technical director, Doug
Morum; and former production man-
ager, David James, have been very
helpful with advice."
The 2001 crew includes a balance
of new- faces and returnees, includ-
ing Andrew Cull of Belgrave who is
promoted to head. carpenter.
Sounds of sawing and hammering
can already be heard from the
Garage which houses the Festival's
worksho s.
Help protect the environment
Reduce, reuse and rec cle
interested was to sign the form,
Twenty people are required to quali-
fy as a group.
Guests from Brussels Majestic
Women's Institute were then wel-
comed: Lucy Hesse, Marguerite and
Charles Thomas, volunteer Lloyd
Hutchinson and Kathy Bridge. Their
theme was based on Osteoporosis, a
crippling disease affecting over
250,000 Canadians, mostly women.
This is degenerative porousness of
the bones, causing them to fracture
more easily and taking longer to
heal.
Osteoporosis is a more common
ailment of aging women than of men
and is believed to be related to the
decrease in estrogen production fol-
lowing menopause.
An interesting play was then
demonstrated to get the message
across as to how one family discov-
ered their 75-year-old mother had it.
To make it even' more interesting,
whenever the word "exercise" was
used everyone in the audience was to
do movements of their arms. When
Osteoporosis was mentioned every-
one was to sing "thin bones, thin
bones ... them dry bones."
Ms Weber thanked them for com-
ing out to inform everyone about a
very important topic that is often
neglected and hoped that they
enjoyed their meal.
BecauSe of "Father's Day" people
are asked next month to wear ties to
dine out, women included. They will
be judged accordingly.

a man says it is a silly, childish
game, it is probably one his wife can
