Donating with pride
It was a very special day for members of the BrusSels Optimists Club recently when they had
the privilege of presenting a cheque for $21,000 to Harold Lang, fourth from right. Lang is head
of a committee from Sick Children's Hospital of Western Ontario which approaches various
organizations around the province regarding fundraising. The tremendous donation was raised
at a dinner auction April 14, as part of a district-wide initiative. Also on hand for the presenta-
tion were, from left: Betty Lou Lang and Optimists Joe Seili, Ken Warwick, Doug McArter, Don
Bray, George Langlois, President Steve Knight, Dave Stephenson, Ross Mitchell and Gerry
Wheeler.

At the Branch
Poor turnout to Legion's general meeting
FROM BRUSSELS
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Monday, April 23 was the Brussels
Legion's general meeting and the
election of officers. There was a very
poor turnout for this event. The
Brussels Branch has over 200 mem-
bers and yet there were only 14
members attending.
District Deputy Commander Don
Young was in attendance to conduct
the elections. He was also disap-
pointed to see such a few showing
any interest in how the Branch runs.
The position of President was not
filled and because of that we will be
holding another special night for
elections on May 17 at 8 p.m. All
members will be receiving a letter
explaining the reasons for this and
urging them to attend this evening.
They will not be asked to run for
president but at least show support
for those who might. All executive
positions will be elected as well.
Friday night supper was well
attended and this week is sweet and
sour meatballs.
Saturday morning was lawn rak-
ing and rolling. The afternoon saw
seven tables.of euchre at play so the
odds of being a winner were good.
The first place winners were Vera
Ahrens and Marjorie Smith with 86
points. It sure helps the score with
seven lone hands. Wow. The second
place winners were Jeanne Ireland
and Eluned McNair with 75 points
and third place went to Mary
Davidson and Mary Huether with 67
points. The lone hands for men went
to a fellow named Jim and ladies
went to Kay McCormick. Euchre is
every two weeks.
The singles dance was well attend-
ed on Sunday night. They enjoyed
the music of Blue Diamond Trio.
The next dance is on Mother's Day.
The Country Ways will be entertain-
ing.

going strong in the town of Brussels.

support for the Scouting movement
particularly from the Royal
Canadian Legion, Brussels
Optimists, Brussels Lions, Teeft's

of the Scouts going to P.E.I. in July.
The boys planted trees at
Benmiller Falls Reserve. They will
be camping there the end of May for
their year-end District camp. They
will be collecting garbage May 2 to
beautify our town for Pitch-in Week.

Our next big function at the
Branch is a Ladies Fashion Show on
May 10. It will be featuring the fash-
ions of Optionelle clothing by host-
ess Brenda Nicholls.

road signs. They enjoyed an Easter
Egg Hunt and a Scavenger Hunt.
The Cubs have been working on
their Religion Badge and are work-
ing on their Helper Badge. Call Rod
at 887-8286 for more information on
how to get their help. The Scouts
have been preparing to go to P.E.I.
They have attended a pre-Jam camp
with 1st Exeter Scouts at the Huron
County Scout Camp weekend of
April 20-22. They have been work-
ing on their Citizen and Leadership
Badges.
Look forward to May 12 when the
Scouts are putting on a car wash at
the car wash in Brussels from 9 - 1 to
help raise money for their trip.
A NOTE FROM BETTY
Spring brings lots of opportunity
for education. The Palliative Care
group hosted their day of learning at
Holmesville with Dr. John Swift and
others sharing their knowledge with
Huron folk interested in palliative
care. Always something to learn
about good medicines and other
choices.
The Farm Safety Day offered the
students at Grey Central a chance to
see country life through the eyes of
others. They were offered lots of
new information on safety on their
farms and homes.
The Wingham Home and Garden
show also offered areas of learning.
It was a good opportunity to see
what's new in North Hiiron for prod-
ucts and services.
With windows open and folks
milling about, it's time to remember
people with allergies. Keep the
campfire blazing and not smudging
as you cook your goodies and limit
the amount of scent you wear at
meetings and gatherings. Breathing
difficulties are very scary, so be con-
siderate.
Nora Stephenson has just returned
from Puerto Plata. As chief grand-
mother she held a position of honour
as Brad Beuermann and Megan
Brown were wed. Parents Neil and
Joan and Maureen and Bruce as well
as Aunt Dianne Bowley went along
for the celebration. The Jack Tarr
Village was the spot of the ceremony
as Cindy and Grant Jarvis were the
legal witnesses to the wedding.
Congratulations, we know you had
a good time.
Brad is now giving lessons on hol-
iday security methods.
The Brussels library basement was
a busy spot Saturday afternoon as
friends and family feted bride-elect
Nicki Gropp with an around-the-
clock shower.
I'm looking forward to Saturday —
animals, wagon rides, birds, faces
painted and of course food at the
