The two-year saga of Acre T
Farms, president Joe Terpstra and the
Ashtield Twp. manure discharges
came to a conclusion two weeks ago
when all charges were dismissed.
Justice of the Peace Avis Rodney
told the court that Terpstra had
shown due diligence in the
construction of the two facilities in
question and moved quickly once
leaks were found in May 1999.
She added the leaks which caused
the problem were due to poor
workmanship and not from the
design of the barn on Lot 4, Conc. 7,
Western Division, or the tank on Lot
5, Conc. 3, Eastern Division.
Commenting after the ruling,
Terpstra expressed his pleasure with
the decision, saying it was great for
the company and swine industry as a
whole. "It was a hard battle for two
years to prove ourselves innocent."
Terpstra said it had been difficult
for the industry, with much said
about intensive livestock operations

While the fact that manure did
flow into two drains and eventually
to Lake Huron was never disputed,
the cause and responsibility were
questioned in the January trial.

any legal actions against the
construction companies which built
the facilities.
His lawyer, ' Tom Corbett,
commented that it was not the
raising of pigs which caused the
leak, but construction problems.
