PAGE 3. 125th committee plans for calendars FROM BLYTH Blyth area buys $350 in Eggs Thanks to the generosity of Blyth and area residents, the Easter Seals campaign has an extra $350 for equip- ment, research and summer camps. When Leela Sharma, the Easter Seals Society representative for Huron County approached the Blyth Lions club seeking support, it was quickly decided that a local business should oversee the selling of paper Easter eggs as a fundraiser. Scrimgeour's Food Town and Blyth Decorating both took up the chal- lenge.. "They,Were totally awesome," said Sharma, of the effort put forth by area residents and the two businesses. Brent Scrimgeotir appreciated the support from the store staff, with•each purchasing at least one egg. The campaign also got support from other businesses which responded to Scrimgeour's staff challenge. With Blyth's 125th anniversary just over a year away, the organizing committee for the celebration has begun to plan events. One of the initial fundraisers for the anniversary will be a commemo- rative calendar featuring old photos of the village, produced on parch- ment paper, A meeting will be held at the Legion May 1 at 8 p.m. at which time community members are invit- ed to bring old photographs so selec- tions can be made. The committee learned that the cost would be $3,500 to produce 1,000 calendars. There will be week- ly prizes and two large awards. Sold for $20 each, the net profit from the $20,000 gross profit will depend on the cash prizes awarded. All pro- ceeds will go to the arena. It was agreed to proceed with the calendars so they are available for sale by Aug. I. Talks were held with regards to a fireworks display which would cost $2,500 for 15 minutes plus $1,000 for two people from the company to oversee the event. An alternative would be to have firefighters involved. Illusionists hired would look after their own advertising and arrange- ments with $2 of the $10 admission fee going to the committee. Phil 'Black is looking after the parade. Bev Blair reported on photo con- test preparations. Local photogra- phers may be asked to act as judges and donate prizes. The deadline for submissions from amateur photogra- phers would be July I, 2002. Each entrant could submit up to five pho- tos, of local subjects, in colour or black and white prints. Discussions are in the works for a tractor pull. The Blyth and District Fire Department will consider hosting breakfasts Saturday and Sunday morning. The Blyth Legion will provide a meal for the Sunday night. A commemorative book, similar to Clinton's 125th will be compiled. Families and businesses are asked to submit histories. The public school will be used for a craft show and sale. A Saturday evening dance is planned with admission part of the registration fee. A garden tour, for a $10 fee, may be incorporated into the weekend events. Several children's events are being considered including clowns, bal- loons, decorated bikes, parade, stagecoach rides, kid's tractor pull and a magician. Other suggestions for events included a spinners and weavers dis- play, street dance, dunk tank, auc- tion, bed races, classic car show, quilt demonstration, time capsule and old time baseball game.
