This is the ninth year that The Lung Association, Huron-Perth has offered Golf Privilege Cards and most of the participating courses have supported this fundraiser since that first year. Funds raised support Lung Association health education initiatives, such as the Breathe Easy Program and the Asthma Action Program, as well as help fund vital medical research into respiratory dis- ease. One in five Canadians has some type of breathing problem and lung disease is the third leading cause, of death in Canada. Golf Privilege Cards are valid throughout the entire 2001 golfing season. To order or for further infor- mation call 519-271-7500 or drop by The Lung Association office at 342 Erie St., Suite 121, in Stratford Check out our WEBSITE at www.northhuron.on.ca From the sidelines It was a simple question By Hugh Nichol It was a simple question asked by a late night sports announcer. By winning the Masters, Tiger Woods is the first to simultaneously hold the titles of what is considered the men's professional grand slam of golf, the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA. What makes this so remarkable is that only four others, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, have managed to win all four in their careers and thus the question: Is this the greatest achieve- ment in sport? While there is little doubt the record will never be equalled, Tiger, whose real name is Eldrick, is not without his critics. Many are quick to point out the championships were not won in the same calendar year while others simply refuse to accept golf as. more than a walk in the park compared to the he-man sports of baseball, basketball, football and hockey. Even I have difficulty with this apples-and-oranges debate. How, for example, do you compare Tiger's performance to Darryl Sittler's 10- point night in 1976, Don Larson's perfect World Series pitching per- formance of 1956, Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game in 1962 or Mario Lemieux's unbeliev- able five-goal outburst in 1988 when he became the first player in National Hockey League history to score at even strength, on the powerplay, shorthanded, on a penalty shot and into an empty net? All hold a special- place in their respective sports record book but are they merely the result of a magical one night stand? If so how about something more seasonal in length such as Joe DiMaggio's 56 consecu- tive game hitting streak in 1941, Mark McGwire's 70-homerun sea- son of 1998, Boston Red Sox Carl Yastrzemskt's triple crown perform- ance of 1967 when he led the American League in batting average, home runs and runs batted in or Wayne Gretzky's 215-point scoring title in 1986? Or if you favour longevity and endurance we have Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive game streak, George Blanda's 26 years in the National Football League or Gordie Howe playing NHL hockey until the age of 52. And never overlook the ultimate international sports stage known as the Olympics. Every American remembers the 1972 seven gold medals performance of swimmer Mark Spitz and none.of us will ever forget Romania's Nadia Comaneci who did the impossible by recording a perfect score on the uneven bars during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. My own personal choice for the greatest achievement by a single per- son in sporting history is as follows: during the 1969-70 hockey season a 22-year-old in only his fourth season of NHL hockey accomplished the following: won the Art.Ross trophy as the league's leading scorer, won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the league's outstanding defense- man, won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player, was named a first team all-star selec- tion, won the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player in the play- offs, and became a Stanley Cup champion when he scored the over- time game winner. He, of course, is Bobby Orr and the "goal" which features number four flying through the air was recently voted the most famous hockey photo ever. Yet my choice was not without second thoughts especially consider- ing that Orr's performance gave him a room full of memories while Tiger received a five-year $100 million endorsement deal with Nike. Maybe we non-believers should heed the words of Jack Nicklaus who once said that on every hole there IS a price to pay. hre on ola dan ary sig; end ids, rge lay, it )me hter and and )bie vith the and ind- 3,1va ick ons 111U- ular iose ins, nna aig; stal Lila was for
