GEAR UP FOR SPRING 2001
Energy efficiency tips for people on the road
Canadian winters can be hard on a
car — cold weather, snow and ice all
take a toll on your vehicle. That's
why it's important to check your car
into the local garage for a rejuvenat-
ing spring tune-up.
It's a decision that may cut your
fuel costs in half, since a poorly
tuned engine can use up to 50 per
cent more fuel than one that is run-
ning properly. Even a minor problem
like a clogged air filter can have a
big impact on fuel consumption. A
spring tune-up will pay for itself
every time you pull up to the pumps
over the next few months.
A typical spring tune-up will
include a change of the engine oil,
new filters and, possibly, adjust-
ments to the vehicle's fuel-injection-
system and electronic ignition. If the
You may often wonder why you
should bother with changing the oil in
your car.
The answer is simple. Your car's
engine generates temperatures in
excess of 200°C under normal operat-
ing conditions. If it's a turbo, that's
more like 300°C! The oil helps pro-
tect your engine. Oil prevents metal
to metal contact and cleans out dirt
and combustion by-products. Many
people don't realize that oil is also an
important part of the cooling system,
dispersing about 20 per cent of
engine heat.
Today's cars are designed with
smaller, more fuel efficient engines,
and are built to tighter tolerances. The
engine oils you put in have to be of an
vehicle's emission system hasn't
been checked in the past year, ask
the mechanic to include this in the
work.
Attention to the following tips can
help you become a better driver
throughout the year.
Tips for improving energy effi-
ciency
Keep your car engine well-tuned.
Follow the manufacturer's mainte-
nance schedule. Keeping your vehi-
cle in top operating condition will
save you fuel and money, reduce
your long-term maintenance costs
and minimize harmful exhaust emis-
sions. A well-maintained vehicle is
also more reliable and could be
worth more when you want to sell it.
Keep your tires inflated to the
pressure specified in your owner's
equally high standard, and the manu-
facturers are continually researching
new and improved products.
But nothing lasts forever. Over
time, the oil will lose some of its vis-
cosity (ability to flow) and will pick
up enough dirt and water in suspen-
sion that it needs to be replaced.
Engine manufacturers generally rec-
ommend an oil change every 5,000 to
6,000 km. If you do nothing else in
the way of preventive maintenance,
do these oil changes. They are the
single most effective thing you can
do. for long engine life. And at about
$20 per oil change, it is also one of
the cheapest.
Are all oils the same? Should you
lust nut any kind of oil in your car?
manual. Under-inflated tires increase
fuel consumption, decrease tire life
and could turn your car into a safety
hazard.
Maintain posted highway speeds.
Driving at 100 km/h instead of 120
km/h can reduce fuel consumption
by.20 per cent.
Turn off the engine when you are
waiting for someone. More t,‘an 10
seconds of idling in the summer uses
up more fuel than restarting the cal.
Anticipate stops and traffic flow
ahead of you. Avoid abrupt stops to
save gas and reduce wear on your
tires and brakes. Defensive driving
techniques result in a smoother ride
and better fuel efficiency.
Improve your fuel efficiency in
summer by minimizing your use of
air conditioning. To stay cool at
The short answer is no — not all oils
are equal. All oils conform to high
standards.
The biggest difference is in the
additives that each company adds.
These additives will enhance the oil's
cleaning effects in the engine, will lay
down a protective layer on the metal
walls to reduce internal friction, and
help the oil to resist thermal and vis-
cosity breakdown.
There are also other additives or oil
treatments you can buy separately.
Such additives can help any oil
remove engine deposits, protect
engine parts, and improve fuel con-
sumption. They are available at auto-
motive stores or wherever you get
your oil changed.
highway speeds, use your car's flow-
through ventilation. ,,,,,When driving
in the city, open a window.
Drive your car only when neces-
sary. Plan your trips for maximum
efficiency. Make one long trip
instead of several short trips. If an
alternate mode of transport such as
cycling or walking is feasible, con-
sider using it. You could also consid-
er car pooling for work or social
activities.
Look for the EnerGuide label. If
you are buying a new vehicle, check
the EnerGuide label on new cars for
their fuel consumption rating. The
fuel consumption ratings for all new
cars and light-duty trucks are also
available in the free Fuel
Consumption Guide. Call the num-
ber below to order your free copy.
