Seniors Too many Eeyores in today's society- By Carol McDonnell Get silly! Give yourself permis- sion to play- in actions and in words. Start small. Bellow out loud your favourite song, even if it is just in your car. You can graduate to karaoke bars later -on. Cha-cha around the kitchen, swinging whoever is at hand. Don't wait for Halloween to dress up, but at least do so then. Did you ever speak Pig Latin? Remember how serious we were as new parents? Dr. Benjamin Spock and each new book on child rearing was devoured and discussed. No wonder we were such a serious group, while building careers as well as parenting. Some of us didn't take much time to relax and play. Our society still seems to have too many Eeyores as a new generation contin- ues this search for perfection. Were young children, especially grandchildren invented just to inspire this playfulness? Just to remind us to relax and take advan- tage of a second chance to play? When our children or grands become teenagers, we just embarrass them. Come to think of it, this is a good reason to continue. Now you can take lessons in play fulness as. The Huron County Children's Aid Society regularly offers clowning courses. A graduate clown told me that they started out by putting on makeup, then tried to get in touch with the part of their self which was able to find the sense of the ridiculous in daily life. After discovering more about their inner self, part of them has to be okay to be risk this silliness. Again youngsters and elders, this clown found, were better able to enjoy this humour. Although the Victorian age is not generally noted for its sense of humour, Lewis Carroll is still cele- brated for the upside-down worlds he created. Lewis Carroll was an Anglican deacon and a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford University - disciplines not usually thought of with chuckles. His fame lies not so much for his mathematical treatises as for the pair of children's books that he wrote Alice in Wonderland, 1865 and Through the Looking Glass, 1871. Both books may still be enjoyed by adults as well as children, and both ages are challenged by his word puzzle in Jaberwocky. Twas brillig and the slithy toves - Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves And the mome raths outgrabe Boy this really gave my comput- er's spellcheck a workout! So relax, laugh a lot and live longer. Be silly in actions as well as deeds. My Pig Latin, I've forgotten but in real Latin one might say- Carpe diem because tempus fugit. Sei2e the day because time is flying. Check out our WEBSITE' at www.northhuron.on.ca
