The junior choir at Londesboro United Church, under the direction of Valerie Van Riesen, per-
formed at the 21st annual Gospel Songfest, April 8 at the church.
Greeters at Blyth United Church
were the Grade 1/Senior
Kindergarten class and John and
Ruth Uyl. Ushering was the senior

In charge of the nursery was Maria
Walden. Lois van Vliet decorated the
church sanctuary.
Nicole Kerr read the gospel lesson
from Luke 9: 51-62.
The sermon was entitled: Kingdom
Cost: Counting the Price of
Discipleship. Rev. Ernest Dow spoke
of how everything has its price.
Jesus, he said paid a price to win the
Kingdom of God, by death on the
cross.
He outlined six things that people
must be ready to give up in order to
live a life obedient to the Kingdom's
purpose. they are: common consen-
sus of society, condemnation, com-
fort and conveniences, community
roles and respectability, kin, our
immediate family ties and kicks -
those personal desires and goals that
are most dear to an individual's soul.
Karen Glousher, Emily Phillips,
Nicole Kerr and Brenda Brooks col-
lected the offering.

By Rev. Adrian A. Van Geest
Blyth Christian Reformed Church
Only days before, the masses
shouted "Blessed is the King of
Israel!" They were talking about
Jesus when he came to Jerusalem,
riding on a donkey.
It's the event we remember on
Palm Sunday. Days later he was
hanging on a cross, with a sign fas-
tened to it that read: Jesus of
Nazareth, the King of the Jews.
Ho* quickly things can change.
The masses can be fickle. They can
be manipulated by crafty people.
And the leading priests of the Jews
proved to be good at such manipula-
tion. They played on people's disap-
pointment with Jesus.
The people had expected him to be
a different kind of king - one who
would restore Israel to its former
glory as a nation. When Jesus was
not moving in that direction, they
were quick to change their tune. And
so Pilate was pushed into sentencing
Jesus to be crucified.
It was Pilate himself who was
responsible for that sign fastened to
the cross. And for him, it was just a
joke. Just as Jesus as a king was a
joke to the soldiers put in charge of
him.
And what else could it be in the
eyes of the uninformed? Who could
see a king in someone who has been
stripped of his clothes and nailed to a
cross?
Even his own disciples did not
think of Jesus as a king at this point.
They had held such hopes too, hopes
about Jesus restoring the kingdom to
Israel. But these hopes were all gone
out the window now.
And then there was this one crimi-
nal, suspended on his own cross,
hanging beside Jesus. It was proba-
bly the first time he had ever heard of
or seen Jesus. They had not exactly
moved in the same social circles.
People like hitt stayed miles away
from teachers like Jesus.
But what he saw and heard from
Jesus while hanging on the cross
made him more perceptive than all
the other people. He began to see
that this sign above Jesus' head real-
ly was no joke at all. He began to see
that despite all the outward signs,
Jesus truly was a king, a king with
real authority.
No one expected a thing from
Jesus anymore. They all thought his
power had been short-circuited. But
not this criminal. He asked of the
painracked, suffering Jesus beside
him: "Remember me when you
come into your kingdom."
And Jesus answered with regal
authority: "I tell you the truth, today
you will be with me in paradise."
Present day appearances about the
kingdom of God can be deceiving.
The eye of flesh doesn't see much of
a kingdom of God on earth. But the
kingdom of God has come. It came
in the person of its king, Jesus
Christ. He laid the groundwork for
