THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 2001. PAGE 21. Huron East considers sale on Brussels history books Accounts in the amount of $1,294,825.59 for Huron East and $18,458.98 for the community centre were approved for payment at the March 20 meeting of Huron East council. The large bill for Huron East was due largely to the tax levies from the county and school boards. The allotment to the county was $595,782.59 with $435,000 going to the Avon Maitland district School Board and $102,000 to the Huron- Perth Catholic District School Board. Policing costs were $36,527 and the payroll totalled $50,868.23. *** Brussels Councillor Grey Wilson consulted council about the possibility of selling the remaining Brussels 125th homecoming history books at a reduced rate so that fewer would have to be stored at the library. Profit gained from the sale would go towards repairing vandalism damage in Homecoming Park. Council will also see if other By Janice Becker Citizen staff One municipal office space abandoned due to amalgamation may eventually have a familiar tenant making more' use o? the facility. Huron County Federation of Agriculture representatives Steve Thompson, Charles Regele, Nick Whyte and Marilyn Broadfoot attended the March 20 meeting of Huron East council to discuss expanded occupancy of the Vanastra site. Councillors were informed the townships have books to be cleared. *** A severance application from Molesworth Farm Supply was supported by council. Grey Councillor Alvin McLellan said that the severance which would take 2.19 hectares from the surrounding farm land would improve operation of the business by giving trucks more room to turn and keeping them off Hwy. 86. *** In spite of lengthy discussions at previous meetings, councillors once again spent time reviewing the benefits and drawbacks of supporting five severance applications from Acre T Farms. The severances would separate existing barns from the surrounding farm land. Many councillors believed that by allowing the applications to go to the Ontario Municipal Board because of rejection at the local level, there could be fewer conditions imposed than the municipality had attached. In a recorded vote, Tuckersmith federation had been tenants of office space and a storage room in the building for many years with a reasonable rent. Access to council chambers offered facilities for executive meetings, press announcements and other such events. The delegation asked council of the future plans for the building, stating the federation would be interested in renting the former municipal office space while retaining use of council chambers,'if a reasonable rent could be established. Deputy-Reeve Bernie MacLellan Bill deJong's was the only dissenting vote in support of the action. *** Approval was given for' an increase in the rates for waste pickup in Brussels by Carter's Waste Disposal. The costs to the municipality will rise from $220.34 to $225 bi-weekly for garbage and $103.60 to $115 for recycleables. The last increase had been in 1994. *** An application will be submitted to the province in an effort to obtain up to 50 per cent grant funding for summer career placements at facilities such as the day care centre, museum and recreation department. *** The budget for the Mid-Huron landfill site, with revenues and expenses of $569,100, was approved. *** The municipality received notification that the community reinvestment funding would remain the same as last year. *** said the new council had not yet had time to inventory accessory buildings, but would be looking at them in the future. "I would be more comfortable with the federation renting the whole building, knowing they were taking care of it." Thompson agreed that could be a good alternative as the Federation could then rent space to other agricultural groups. "It is an ideal location for us to expand our services." It was suggested a visit to the site be included in an upcoming road tour. Council referred a request from Plant Paradise in Vanastra to the public works department. As in past years, the nursery business requested the use of fire hydrants to provide enough water to the operation in the spring and summer. The public works department will determine if a better solution can be found, but Clerk-Administrator Jack McLachlan assured councillors sufficient water would be provided. *** Support was given to several resolutions from other municipalities including the 'fwp. of Armour regarding the replacement of the current voting-by-proxy system: Town of Caledon, protocol for school boards to advise municipalities of joint capital projects and agricultural funding extensions; Town of Mono, consideration of abandoned wells in the evaluation criteria for issuing certificates of authority for the spreading of biosolids and septic waste and Town of Owen Sound, to petition the provincial government to give immediate and binding assurance that the functions of prisoner transportation and court security will be fully assumed by the province or that the affected municipality be fully reimbursed for the actual cost of these duties.
