Agriculture Brussels Livestock report Limousin steers avg. 1,455 lbs, sell for $135.25 Total receipts at Brussels Livestock for the week ending March 30 were 2,543 head of cattle and 1,128 lambs and goats. On Tuesday, fed steers and heifers sold at prices $2 lower. Cows sold on a steady market. On Thursday, veal sold on a good strong active trade while the lambs sold fully steady. On Friday, all weights of stockers sold on a steady market. There were 468 steers on offer selling from $118 to $126 with sales to $135.25. These precautions include keeping away from farms and ranches anyone who has been in a country with foot-and-mouth disease within the past 14 days, and if they must come to the farm or ranch, ensuring that their shoes, clothing and equipment are disinfected. Forty-six steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaged 1,454 lbs. and sold for an average price of $120.11 with one charolais steer weighing 1,090 lbs. and selling for $127. Their overall offering of seven heifers averaged 1,289 lbs. "and sold for an average of $121.66. Their total consignment of twenty-one heifers averaged 1,198 lbs. and sold for an average of $122.09. Block points out that the most important precaution is for individuals to take the threat of this disease seriously and not attempt to smuggle meat or other agricultural products into Canada. Those caught illegally bringing agricultural products into the country can be fined up to $400 on the spot, with further prosecution possible for more serious offences. The cattle industry is supportive of fining all 1,228 lbs. selling for an average of $125.97 with sales to $127. Two limousin heifers consigned by Dennis Hallahan, Blyth, averaged 1,260 lbs. and sold to Dominion Meats for $125.25. Herman Van Der Borgh, Listowel, consigned seven heifers averaging 1,414 lbs. and sold for an average of $121.22 with one gold heifer weighing 1,190 lbs. selling for $127.50. Four heifers consigned by David J. Hill, Arthur, averaged 1,264 Lbs. and sold for an average of $120.94 with sales to $123. Bill Kerslake, Staffa, consigned twenty heifers averaging 1,263 lbs. selling for an average of $120.12 with one red heifer weighing 1,315 lbs. selling to Norwich Meats for $126.25. There were 256 cows on offer. DI and D2 cows sold $65 to $70 with sales to $96.50; D3, $60 to $65; D4, $50 to $60. Bill Clarke, Grand Valley, consigned one limousin cow weighing 1,090 lbs. which sold for $96.50. One holstein cow consigned by Murray Howatt, Blyth, weighed 1,050 lbs. and sold for $83. Matthew Edgar, Wroxeter, consigned by one limousin cow which weighed 915 lbs. and sold for $81. There were 15 bulls on offer selling from $74 to $87.50 with sales to $96. Norm Hossfield, Hanover, consigned one limousin bull which weighed 2,480 lbs. and sold for $89.50. One charolais bull consigned by Kurt Oelschlagel. Clifford; weighed 1.710 lbs. and sold for $89. individuals who break this law. CCA commends the extra precautions now being taken by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Customs and Revenue Canada Agency to ensure that this disease is not introduced into Canada, CCA has long advocated stricter surveillance at bordei points. CCA is urging that these precautions be maintained after the current outbreak in Europe is brought under control. There were 154 head of veal on offer.
