Drink coffee, help cause Coffee Caper for epilepsy Kathy Bromley, left, and Les Cook, two Blyth residents who have dealt with epilepsy in their lives, met with Epilepsy Huron-Perth-Bruce Executive Director Marj Vere at the Grandview as they prepared for the Coffee Caper fundrais- er this Friday. FROM BLYTH Groups to benefit from sale of hydro North Huron council at its March 19 meeting, accepted the recommen- dation of the old Blyth council regarding the allocation of funds from the sale of Blyth Hydro. • The recommendation would see Blyth Festival, Blyth ' Memorial Community Hall's capital reserve, Blyth street improvements and Blyth and District Community Centre operating fund get a boost of $6,700. Blyth and District Community Centre would also benefit from $265,000 for the capital fund, while Blyth Brook Community Greenway committee and - the Blyth 125th anniversary committee would each receive $5,000. The W.C. Thuell Memorial Park will get $3,500. Clerk-Administrator John Stewart explained that there would be addi- tional funds but none of that money has been designated. By Janice Becker Citizeh staff It is a condition which affects more than three per cent of of Canadians with 23 children diagnosed every day. Epilepsy, one of the most common neurological disorders, outnumbered only by dementia and strokes, is afflicting an ever-increasing number of elderly. In an effort to broaden awareness while raising money for research and summer camps, Epilepsy of Huron- Perth-Bruce is promoting Coffee Caper across the region. Restaurants such as the Grandview in Blyth have agreed to donate a por- tion of coffee or tea sales on Friday, March 30 to the cause. Chapter Executive Director Marj Vere, involved with the organization for 18 years, said the awareness cam- paign is very important for those who live with epilepsy. Though many people may be aware of the grand mal seizure type of epilepsy, there are actually 47 differ- ent types. Some are as non-intrusive as a child who sits and stares blankly for 15 seconds or the adult who fuss- es with his or her own clothes. Others may appear to be disoriented as they get up and wander around for brief periods. Not all forms of epilepsy involve convulsions and falling to the floor. was recommended. Bromley's moth- er would not accept either and after five years, the epilepsy was diag- nosed. Brain surgery eventually helped, greatly decreasing the daily medication requirements. Les Cook, who has been seizure- free since his late teens, said he almost forgets about it. His bout with the disorder began at 15. "Though it can be very difficult for teens," said Vere, "as they try to get their driver's licence," the hardship of diagnosis at 65 is equally hard. Seven per cent of one in every 14 seniors has epilepsy, she said. They are often left feeling hopeless, misun- derstood, lonely and can be over- medicated. More than 15 restaurants in Huron County will be participating in the Coffee Caper this Friday, including locations in Wingham, Seaforth, Clinton, Goderich, Bayfield, Hensall and Zurich. Many more from Perth County will join in the effort. Donations will also be gratefully accepted. Anyone wishing more information about epilepsy can contact the Huron- Perth-Bruce chapter at 482-5527, 1- 800-387-5259 or via email at epilep- sy@tcc.on.ca. For two Blyth residents who have dealt with the disorder, finding the proper medications or medical treat- ments were key to successful control. Kathy Bromley had her first seizure as a young child in school. When doctors could not diagnose the cause, it was attributed to a cry for attention and later, a suggestion for placement in a psychiatric hospital 3.11 &mega *1- Vocalist "./- Ann Marie Sparling with guest musicians Sharon Johnston Susanna Lyman Barb Bosman ../t- March 31 - 7:30 p.m. Trinity Anglican Church Blyth clip & save March is Epilepsy Awareness Month across Canada and the Huron-Bruce-Perth Chapter is reminding the public about it.
