THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 2001. 3,000-4,000 varieties grown outside The lovely lily The Wiegersmas enjoy beauty around them at work, as they propagate bulbs for retail and grow lilies for wholesale at their RR1, Bluevale home, under the name Village and Farm Brand. Continued from A-15 probably be about 3,000-4,000 of the lilies in bloom this year. "We often have people just stop to look," says Arnold. The flower commands that kind of attention, says Margy. "They are spectacular. They have a presence. They make a statement." Growing the garden bulb to be marketable takes about three years, Arnold says. "People may think bulbs cost a lot, but it's been three years to get it there." Some of the new varieties can take seven to 10 years. "To be a proven hybrid, repro- ducing over and over again, could take that long," he says. Once the bulbs are in the ground, however, people get what they pay for. Lilies are easy to grow and easy to care for, the Wiegersmas say. "And they multiply so you get a nice bunch after a few years," says Margy. The Asiatic and L.A. hybrids bloom for about a month in late June or early to mid-July. "However, the more buds the longer they will bloom," says Margy, adding that it could be up to eight weeks. Orientals bloom in August. All of this relies on a number of variables, the Wiegersmas note, such as sun, moisture and the time of planting. As the Orientals are not as cold hardy as other hybrids, they require mulch over the winter. All lilies like sunshine. "But if you find that a spot is shadier then when you originally planted them and they are not blooming, just transplant them to a better location in the fall." The best time for this is October to have the plant resume its normal cycle. However, Margy says, if planted in the spring, while there would be less bud, and it would bloom later, it would self-correct the next year. With the fundraiser which ends in time for people to get those bulbs in the .ground in April the Wiegersmas hope for a busy year. Arnold jokes, "We want to run out of bulbs." The couple's long-term goal is, according to Arnold, "to see 10 acres of lilies in bloom. In Holland you would have that." Farm injuries traditionally peak during the summer and fall, in association with the times when field work intensifies. Sixty-four per cent of work-related facilities and 59 per cent of hospitalized injuries occurred during the summer and fall (July to December). Spring Is Just Around The Corner!
