Brussels Livestock report
265 heifers avg. $118 to $127, sales to $137
Total receipts at Brussels
Livestock for the week ending
March 9 were 2,115 head of cattle
and 265 lambs and goats.
On Tuesday, the fed steers and
heifers sold at prices $3 to $5 higher.
The cows sold on a good steady
trade. On Thursday, veal sold steady.
The lambs also sold on a fully steady
market to last week. On Friday, all
weights of stockers sold at prices $2
higher:
There were 358 steers on offer
selling from $118 to $127 with sales
to $144.50. Two limousin steers
consigned by Jim
Howatt,Londesboro, averaged 1,448
lbs. and sold to Norval Meat Packers
for $137.50. His overall offering of
twenty-seven steers averaged 1,540
lbs. and sold for an average of
$128. I 8. Louis Vanhooydonk,
Alvinston, consigned one red steer
weighing 1,295 lbs. selling to Holly
Park Meat Packers for $137.25. His
overall offering of three steers
averaged 1,338 lbs. selling for an
average of $125.72.
Twenty steers consigned by Larry
Ryan, Crediton, averaged 1,355 lbs.
selling for an average of $132.73.
His top limousin steer weighed
1,290 lbs. and sold to Norwich
Packers for $136.50. Tom and Ernie
Lobb, Clinton, consigned four
limousin steer averaging 1,398 lbs.
selling for an average of $126.83
with a top price of $127.25. Four

Two local men have made their
mark with Beef Improvement
Ontario.
At the annual convention held in
Toronto recently, Paul Coultes of
RR5, Brussels was elected to the
board of directors for the western
region.
Coultes had served as a board
member in the past year, was a
director for the Ontario Cattle
The Ontario Corn Producers'
Association (OCPA) continues to
tight for equity for Ontario grain and
oilseed producers and supports the
grassroots' "Day of Protest" by the
province's farmers on March 14.
"While we appreciate the
announcement by the federal
government of a $500 million
addition to safety net programs and
eagerly await a provincial
announcement in support of grain
and oilseed producers, the federal
funding has clearly fallen short of
the minimum $900 million required
to achieve equity with farmers in the
United States and Quebec," said

Cunningham Farms, Lucan,
averaged 1,495 lbs. and sold for an
average of $121.73. One gold steer
weighing 1,260 lbs. sold for
$128.50. Neil Thompson, Atwood,
consigned ten steers averaging 1,403
lbs. selling for an average of $118.84
with one red steer weighing 1,465
lbs. selling for $127.25.
There were 265 heifer on offer
selling from $118 to $127 with sales
to $137. Leroy Gould, Exeter,
consigned one gold heifer weighirig
1,255 lbs. selling to Norval Meat
Packers for $135.50. His overall
Feeders' Association for the past
three years as well as .a Huron
County Beef Producer director.
Hilbert Van Ankum of Wroxeter
earned the Mark of Excellence
award for 2000, named in honour of
Mark Warren, of member of the
provisional BIO board who passed
away tragically in 1993.
The award is given to the producer
who has used BIO's services to
21,000-member OCPA.
Since August of last year, when
thousands attended meetings across
the province to express their
concerns and worries about the
impact of U.S. subsidies, grassroots
offering of five heifers averaged
1,262 lbs. and sold for an average of
$127.09. Five heifers consigned by
Dan Renwick, Clifford, averaged
1,238 lbs. and sold for an average of
$124.19. His top limousin steer
weighed 1,385 lbs. and sold to St.
Helens Meat Packers for $134.50.
One limousin heifer consigned by
Grant Lehbrass, Alvinston, weighed
1,145 lbs. and sold to Dominion
Meats for $130. Merkley Farms,
Wroxeter, consigned one limousin
heifer weighing 1,270 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $132.50. Their
overall offering of eight heifers
averaged 1,221 lbs. and sold for an
average of $126.61.
B & T Farms, Ailsa Craig,
consigned seventeen heifers
averaging 1,260 lbs. selling for an
average of $126.40 with seven red
heifers which averaged 1,244 lbs.

Ferg. A. Jantzi, Dublin, averaged
1,184 lbs. and sold for $126.24 with
one limousin heifer weighing 1,140
lbs. selling for $129. Rob Gardiner,
Staffa, consigned one limousin
heifer weighing 1,240 lbs. selling for
$127.50. His overall offering of
twenty-one heifers averaged 1,196
lbs. and sold for an average price of
$123.64.
Three charolais heifers consigned
by Terry Barker, Mitchell, averaged
1,447 lbs. and sold for an average of
$122.85 with one charolais heifer

There were 14 bulls on offer
