School initiative gets children off to good start
Continued from page 23
Students at UTES were offered
toast, fruit, juice and milk and an
important message.
McIntosh said children can be
taught that breakfast can be quick
and nutritious—reinforcing the fact
that with just a little time
management, breakfast needs can be
met easily. The group atmosphere is
an additional perk for students
because it gives them the
opportunity to socialize with their
peers.
McIntosh said she is the contact
person for any school who has
assessed a need for the breakfast
program and wants the information
(and help) to get it up and running.
She also helps with the selection of
food, assistance with the application
forms and in organizing grant money
to help pay the costs.
Some of the money comes from
the Canadian Living Foundation,
with other monies coming from
contributions by local organizations
such as the Red Cross and the United
Way—all in a bid to keep the
program a community-oriented
function.
"There is always an element of
community ownership," said
McIntosh.
The program was established in
December 1999 to address the
problem of some students going to
school unnourished. According to
statistics, 20 per cent of children in
Grade 4 alone do not eat breakfast.
This number increases with age.
