Blyth soccer seeks municipal help for new fields
FROM BLYTH
A former Blyth resident has
received honours for the second con-
secutive year for his top performance
in Ontario as a salesperson for
Bestfoods.
McInnes, in his third year with
Bestfoods, is the first person to win
the award two years in a row.
The award, presented at the annual
conference in Banff, AB., is based on
sales volume, company involvement,
computer usage, team participation,
store displays and innovative mar-
keting.
On Monday, Feb. 22 there were
five tables of euchre in play at
Bainton's Art Gallery. The high lady
was Lillian Appleby and Ted East
was the high man, having also
earned seven lone hands. The most
lone hands for the ladies went to Kay
Konarski while Kathy Bromley had
the most lone hands for the men.
Ruth Shiell was the low lady and
Evelyn Christensen was the low man
for the night.
Euchre resumes every Monday
night at 8 p.m.
On Friday, March 2 the monthly
Blyth and Area Dining Out program
was hosted again at the Blyth
Anglican Church by Town and
Country. There were 32 guests in
attendance as well as 11 deliveries
by Adrian Vos. Special thanks to
extra helpers Greg Brandon and
Amanda Bearss who helped with the
meal. The menu was chicken with
apple/raisin pie and ice cream for
dessert.
Convenor Diane Weber welcomed
everyone. Special guests from

Herb Van Amersfoort attended the
North Huron council meeting
Monday night to discuss the possi-
bility of some municipal funding to
assist with the construction of new
soccer fields at the south edge of the
village.
Though Van Amersfoort wondered
about the funds from the sale of the
Blyth PUC, Deputy-Reeve Jeff
Howson explained that that money
had already been earmarked for
other projects.
Councillor Murray Nesbitt ques-
tioned the need for three fields, and
wondered what would happen to the
original one behind the arena that
had come about through the efforts
of many community groups and indi-
viduals.
Seaforth Manor were brought over
by Charlene Foxton. Margaret
Radford is well known by Blyth res-
idents and also present was Man
Willis. Although Everett Scrimgeour
would have loved to attend, he cur-
rently is in the hospital where he
recently underwent a knee replace-
ment and is recuperating well. We
hope the speedy recovery continues.
Other people that we are thinking
of are Dorothy Daer, Graeme
McDowell, Marian Haggitt and
Bernice McClinchey who were
unable to attend this month.
Birthdays being celebrated for the
month of March are Bill Craig,
Frances Clark, Marie Button, Toni
Vos and our great cook Millie
Hoggarth. Also special congratula-
tions go out to Lawrence and Jean
Plaetzer who are celebrating an
anniversary this month.
Bill Craig received an early birth-
day present as he was the winner in
the 50/50 draw. The door prize went
to Mrs. Hulzebos.
Dianne handed out surveys for
everyone to fill out concerning the
likes/dislikes of the diners meals and
entertainment. A special reminder
was made that March is the Kidney
Foundation month.

Van Amersfoort explained that
while the field was perfect for the
younger teams and would always be
utilized in this manner, it was too
narrow for the older players. He said
that while the field was originally
intended to be official size, some-
thing happened when constructed
and it fell short.
Van Amersfoort noted as well that
the tremendous growth of soccer in
. the area, from 45 when it began in
1986 to an estimated 200 plus this
season, has made scheduling games
a problem. Often times the field was
overbooked and as games have to be
played in the daylight there was no
time for practices.
As well, Blyth is the only team in
the league in which they play that his
unable to host a tournament, which
would bring revenue to the munici-
pality, Van Amersfoort explained.
The guest speaker is no stranger to
many involved in the Town and
Country program — Tammy Antaya
from Exeter. She spoke on the
LifeLine service telephones now
available. These provide immediate
emergency responses. The calls go in
to the office in Toronto which is
staffed 24 hours a day. In turn,
police, fire departments, ambulance
and family members can be informed
immediately if needed. Help is only
a touch away, whether it be in the
form of a necklace or a bracelet that
people can speak into to give the
needed information.
If a person is unable to speak due
to a heart attack, stroke, etc. then
someone will automatically be noti-
fied to deal with the matter as quick-
ly as possible. Periodically the
equipment is set off by mistake, yet
cases like this are much nicer to deal
with than an emergency. It also
proves that the equipment is working
properly.
A short informative film was
shown. The price of this essential
product is equivalent to drinking ,wo
cups of. coffee a day.
Asked what the soccer group was
doing to raise the money needed,
Van Amersfoort said that there is
currently $13,000 in the soccer
account. Registration would help
with costs to a degree, but he is hop-
ing for sponsorships from munici-
palities and corporations.
Howson said that many people
from Blyth were concerned that the
new fields would mean the old one
wouldn't be used. "But if you got the
word out, if people had a better
understanding of some of the things
you've told us tonight, it might help
clear up those concerns."
As the land for the new fields had
been donated for use to the soccer
group, Howson noted, "It would be
foolish for you to walk away from
what's been thrown in your lap."
Councillor Archie MacGowan said
it would be beneficial for council to

consider this issue at budget.
Van Amersfoort estimated that
about $10,000-$15,000 was still
needed.
