It's a fact that many fire deaths
are caused by people attempting
to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol.
There's more to responsible drinking
than taking a cab. Don't put yourself—
or your family— at risk to fire.

CAA offers safety advice for spring break travellers
Spring break can be an exciting
time for college and university
students, especially if travel is
involved. But while you're having
fun, take steps to ensure that your
vacation is safe, advises CAA
Central Ontario.
"You can greatly reduce your
chances of becoming a crime victim
by following a few common sense
suggestions," said Carey-Ann
Greenham, spokesperson for CAA
Central Ontario. "For many students,
this could be their first major trip
without their parents. They may get
caught up in the excitement and let
their guard down, making them more
vulnerable to crime."
CAA Central Ontario offers some
tips for safe travel for college and
university students:
• Travel well-lighted streets and in
a group. Avoid dark corners, alleys
and entrances to buildings.
• Never separate from your friends,
especially at night.
• Don't leave bags unattended at
the airport or at the hotel when you
arrive or leave.
• At the airport or hotel check-in
counter or shuttle, keep your
attention on your bags. Criminals
work in teams with one distracting
you long enough for a partner to
take your bag.
• Never leave your drink
unattended. As well, do not accept
drinks from strangers.
• Carry traveller's cheques since
they can be replaced if stolen or
lost. Never carry more cash than
you can afford to lose.
• Do not bring expensive jewellery
on your vacation.
• Quickly claim your bags at the
airport baggage area. Criminals can
grab bags not immediately picked
up.
• Purchase out-of-province medical
and travel insurance before you
leave Canada. This can be
purchased through CAA.
• Leave the name of the resort and
a phone number where you can be
reached with your parents or
someone you trust.
• Place cash and your passport in a
hotel safe. Never carry your
passport with you once you've
reached your destination to reduce
the chance of it being stolen. This is
your key to getting back into
Canada problem-free and it proves
your Canadian citizenship to
authorities in the country you are
visiting.
• When using a bank machine,
choose one in a well-lighted, public
area.
• Follow your intuition. If you are
in a situation where you feel you
are in danger, leave immediately.
CAA Central Ontario is a not-for- There are 1.7 million CAA members
profit auto club offering insurance, in Ontario and four million members
