Renovation complete in ER/outpatient area of WDH
By Jim Brown
Wingham Advance-Times
It hasn't taken very long for the
new governance councils to put
front-line staff to work on some very
important projects, clinical leader for
the rehabilitation centre Pat Pietrek
informed the February meeting of
the Wingham and District Hospital
Board.
From the out-patient council there
are work teams in place for two
projects.
The first team is working on
improving the process of pre-
admission to surgery, and the
second is working to revise the
hospital's Code Orange (external
disaster) plan and will be planning a
disaster exercise before the end of
the year.
Pietrek indicated the hospital came
close to having a Code orange the
previous week when a school bus
rolled into the ditch west of
Lucknow.
From the in-patient council, a team
Margret Comack has been elected
to the board of directors of the
Ontario Hospital Association, in the
registered nurse position.
Comack is the vice president of
multi-site administration
(responsible for Listowel and
Wingham Hospitals) and chief
nursing officer for the Huron Perth
Hospitals Partnership, a network of
eight hospitals in southwestern
Ontario.
The election was ratified at the
general meeting of the 01-IA
membership held last Wednesday in
Toronto.
This milestone event came about
as the result of a resolution approved
at the Nov. 5 annual meeting, to
amend OHA bylaw 1 to provide for
a registered nurse and a physician to
be elected as directors to the OHA
board. Nominations for these
positions were invited from all OHA
members. A total of 23 people were
nominated for the nursing position.
"This is appropriate recognition of
the high esteem in which the
leadership of the Huron Perth
Hospitals Partnership is held by
other prominent health care
professionals across the province,
and each of the hospitals in our
system will benefit as a result of this
appointment," stated Bob Pike,
chairman of the Wingham and
District Hospital board.
"Margret's desire to represent
nursing at the 01-IA level is a clear
reflection of her commitment and
sensitivity to nurses' concerns and
is working on improving the meal
time schedule with a goal of
increasing the time between meals
during the day without significantly
affecting the budget.
All of these work teams are multi-
disciplinary in nature and involve
mainly frontline staff.
They use principles and guidelines
based on the performance excellence
program. The teams have decision-
making authority within the
boundaries outlined by leadership..
RENOVATIONS
Pietrek said the renovations to
the emergency and out-patients
area of the hospital have been
completed.
The expanded reception area
provides a full, unobstructed view of
the waiting area and nursing station,
putting the hospital in compliance
with Ministry of Health and long-
term-care guidelines.
There is more work space at the
nursing station for the staff and room
at registration to separate scheduled
and non-scheduled patients.
the changing environment the nurses
of Huron and Perth are
experiencing," remarked David
Hicks, chairman of the Listowel
Memorial Hospital board.
Comack noted that being elected
to the OHA board of directors as the
first nurse in this newly created
position is a great honour and very
exciting for the voice of nursing.
"I am looking forward to great
learning from my activity as a
director and will be working
thoughtfully to create a unique
strategy that will influence the future
of nursing," she added.
At the February meeting of the
Wingham and District Hospital
Board last Thursday, Pike indicated
the physician on the board is from
the Ottawa area.
Comack indicated it's the first time
in 75 years that a nursing
representative will be sitting on the
board of dittctors.
Although this position will involve
Maintenance and emergency staff
as well as physicians provided input
into planning, designing and creating
the new work space.
EDUCATION
Pietrek stated several leaders from
the North System were able to attend
a workshop on negotiating skilli.
The program was offered at
Stratford General Hospital by a law
student and was arranged by Tom
Groves, who assists with Human
Resources issues.
Because of the size of the Huron
Perth Hospitals Partnership, a
Canadian Institute for Health
Information workshop on the
interpretation and use of the
workloading information gathered
will be hosted by Wingham.
PARKING
Pietrek indicated the hospital has
submitted a request to the Township
of North Huron to have two on-street
parking spots across from the
rehabilitation entrance of the
hospital designated as handicapped
spots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
a lot more work, she said it would
not take away from doing her job as
site administrator.
The OHA board meets once a
month, the third Tuesday, and the
Wingham board meets the fourth
Thursday. She will be able to update
the local board on the happenings at
the OHA.
"This will be an exciting
adventure," said Comack.

EQUIPMENT
The hospital donated a stretcher
and bedside lockers to the North
Huron-Wescast Community
Complex for the first aid room.
The equipment was in place for the
open house held Feb. 18.
to Friday.
While this will ensure there is
some parking close to this entrance
for patients, it will not hinder
residents from having guest parking
on the street during weekends or
evenings.
