THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2001. United congregants to pass the hat FROM AUBURN On Feb. 18 welcome was given by Rev. Paul Ross to begin the Sunday service at Knox United Church. Announcements were given. Next week will be Pass the Hat for a con- tribution for India Earthquake Relief Fund. The children came to the front and out of the mystery bag Rev. Ross's first bank book was drawn. He spoke about the value of saving and giving. Scripture was from Luke 6, the Beatitudes. Two men, a shrub and a tree was the topic of the sermon. A tree is planted near water and sends out its roots near the moisture. It flourishes, stays green and bears fruit. A shrub planted on rocky land cannot do well but becomes a scrully plant with falling leaves and poor growth. Man is similar, Rev. Ross said. What one does with life is what he receives. One should obey the Beatitudes, willingly give to those who need, love those who hate you and judge not. No one is perfect. Offering was presented by Laura Mae Chamney and Grace Cartwright. Following church the congrega- tion of Knox United went downstairs for a luncheon served by the ladies. Remembrance was given for those who had passed away. It was decided to reduce the num- ber of elders and stewards A presbytery representative is needed for the congregation. If someone could do this please talk to Rev. Ross. Brenda Empey offered to give quarterly reports to show how the finances are. Jim Whytock is taking care of the sidewalks, etc. as Jim Glousher does not wish to do it. He is to be thanked for all the years that he has done it for us. Gordon Gross spoke regarding a change of furnaces which would be an investment. This is to be left for now and considered later. A number of people have given On Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. the Auburn WI is having a dessert and euchre party with many draws. Proceeds are for the Children's Hospital. The price is $4. - A quilt was finished at Knox United this past week. Lois Haines took it home to complete the edging. On Feb. 26 the UCW plans on quilt- ing another one. excellent care to numerous things, Maxine and Bill Seers, Mr. and Mrs. M. Bean, Jim Whytock and many others. They are thanked. Rev. Ross brought it to the congre- gants attention that church should start at 9:45 a.m. sharp! He would like to be back to Londesboro church on time. Next year's annual meeting will be on Feb. 17. The capable chairlady for the meeting was Alice McDowell. Chinchilla Club meets By Michael Roy On Feb. 3 the second 4-H Chinchilla Club meeting was held at the Clinton Cargill meeting room. President Nicole Moore led in the 4-H pledge and the roll call. Tonya Drost, acting secretary, read out the minutes of the previous meeting. Leaders Ray and Barb Storey dis- cussed chinchilla care and mainte- nance, including housing and feed- ing. Two chinchillas were shown and members discussed what quali- ties to look for when selecting a chinchilla. They drew numbers to see in what order they would pick their chin- chillas. Members selected two chin- chillas each and were given cages, feed and other supplies. To end the meeting muffins and pop were supplied by the leaders. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 16 at Cargill at 7 p.m. Collecting their cards It was a day of smiles and friendship at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Wingham, Feb. 14, when the children participated in red and white day and handed out Valentines.
