HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2001-02-07, Page 8Bulletts down Exeter3-1, 4-3 The Brussels Bantam Bulletts hit the road Thursday, Feb. 1 for Huron Park to play Exeter. The Bulletts struck early register- ing the first goal in the opening frame. Ashley Ritchie picked up a Brittany Campbell centering pass and rapped the puck home off her own rebound. In the third, Kerri Meier put Brussels up by two banking a shot in off a defender's glove assisted by Campbell. Exeter picked up a goal moments later to narrow the margin to one. The Biilletts struck back with Campbell scoring on a wraparound. Exeter mounted a charge but were denied by the goaltending of Nikki Berfeltz in the Brussels cage. The final score was Bulletts 3, Exeter 1. It was an exciting match when Exeter made the return trip to Brussels on Feb. 3. Ritchie opened the scoring assisted by Campbell and Michelle Cook. The Bulletts struck again with Cook scoring a nice goal set up by Jenn Hopf and Ritchie. The Bulletts continued their assault notching another marker to give them a three-goal lead. Ritchie snapped in her second of the night set up by Hopf and Campbell. Exeter however came storming back in the third busting the twine twice to narrow the margin to one. Campbell put the Bulletts up by two again on a feed from Cook. Exeter would close out the scoring with just over a minute remaining but that's as close as they came. The Bulletts hung on for the 4-3 victory. The final game of the season for the Bulletts was Sunday, Feb. 4 in Brussels with Lambeth in town. Lambeth came with a depleted squad and that would prove to be costly. Ritchie scored for Brussels seconds into the game on a nice tip from a Rachel Elliott shot. Hopf gained the other assist. Then Nicole Procter put the home team up by two tucking the puck behind the Lambeth goalie on a pass by Campbell. Early in the second Procter struck again beating the Lambeth goalie with a wrist shot set up by Elliott. Seconds later Elliott fed the puck to Kristen Palmer who put the squad up by four. Meier then scored on a wrist shot assisted by Cook. wen Procter notched the hattrick on a back-hand shot in the third assisted by Campbell. Campbell increased the lead to seven slapping the puck in the Lambeth net assisted by Procter and Sarah McDonald. Elliott tallied the final Bullett marker scor- ing with a minute left in the game. She was set up by Procter. The final score was Brussels 8, Lambeth 0. The Bulletts finished the regular season with 17 wins, one loss and two ties to finish top in their league. With their backs to the wall, the Bulldogs came out flying and dominated the play. Blyth picked up the only goal of the first period, then added four sec- ond-period goals and four more in the third to post a 9-0 win. Travis Shelton registered the shutout in the Bulldog cage. Trever Kroehler scored three times for the Dogs, Campbell added two, Nate Witherspoon, Neil Salverda, Hoegy and Anderson added singles. Stewart chipped in with four assists, Mike Bean, Anderson and Loder added two each and T.J. Marks, Campbell, Rushton and Hoegy helped with one each. Blyth hosts game four Monday, Feb. 5. PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2001. Sports 1 on 1 One of the ABCDD Gals dogged the moves of a Lucknow Bad Apple in this match-up in Blyth on Sunday night. The local team came close losing this one by 5-4. Their next game is against the Wingham PeeWee Girls, Sunday night. A fundraiser is planned for sometime in the future against the Nasty Habits. (Vicky Bremner photo) Bulldogs trail series The Blyth Bantam Bulldogs cur- rently trail in their best of five play- off series with Hensall two games to one. In the opening game in Hensall Jan. 26, Blyth held a 4-3 lead after two periods. HenSall scored two unanswered third period goals to take the win 5-4. Micah Loder scored twice for Blyth, with singles going to Cody Anderson and Andy Toll. Assists were picked up by Kirk Stewart, two, Lee Prescott and Ryan McClinchey. In game two in Blyth, the Bulldogs fought back in the third frame to tie the game. However Hensall scored late goals to clinch a 5-3 victory. Patrick Rushton, Tyler Campbell and Toll scored for the Bulldogs with assists going to Sean Hoegy, Campbell and McClinchey.
