THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2001. By Jim Brown Wingham Advance-Times Heart patients at the Wingham and District Hospital may not have such a long wait to get tests. Chief of Staff Dr. Marie Gear said St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener is applying for funding for a cardiovascular program. This would include angiograms, which is a diagnostic program for low-risk heart patients. Continued from page 20 Clinton history book, discovered that there were competitions held during the town's centennial in 1975 to come up with a flag and logo for the town. The flag was designed by June Boussey, and the logo Mrs. Chas. Nelson. The logo incorporates a Huron County map, showing Clinton as the "Hub of Huron", along with a radar graphic and the words, "The Home of Radar in Canada", and the town's coat of arms. Bob Szusz, former Hullett Twp. reeve, believes it was also a centennial celebration that resulted in that municipality developing a logo. The logo, which Szusz thinks was developed through working with school children and community members, features a goose in a swamp, to represent the Hullett Wildlife Area, along with a farm scene, and mentions both agriculture . and environment. Cox pointed to a story in The Goderich Twp. History which gives the history of that township's crest. The story, from the book published in 1984, states: "In 1976 the Goderich TwP• recreation committee together with the township - council planned the creation of a township crest. A competition was held among the school children in the area and the top six entries were selected. Winners were Douglas Moffatt, David Lobb, Jane Perrott, Cheryl Thompson, David Johnston and Scott Wilson and their entries were then given to a local artist Arie VanDer Ende, to be considered in his designing of our crest. "Agriculture is the main theme while the tourist industry and both summer and winter sports are included. Our crest is in the shape of an apple (complete with stem and blossom end), depicting the many fruit farms. At the top of the crest is a beautiful sunset, for Goderich Township has 13 miles of Lake 'Huron shoreline where some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world are witnessed. The tourist industry is important here. We are bordered on the north by the Maitland River and on the south by the Bayfield River, and the blue horizontal lines depict these shorelines. In the centre is a tractor on a green pasture, and below are two heads of grain portraying the mixed farming of this area. The snowflake at the base reminds us that we are in the snowbelt area of Western Ontario, and that winter sports are becoming increasingly popular." Those with ideas for a logo for the new municipality are asked to make submissions to the Central Huron office at the Clinton Town Hall to the attention of Cox or Clerk Richard Harding, The councillor suggested that even ideas on how to If a patient required balloons or surgery they would have to go to London. Dr. Gear, said it could be another two years before a full cardiovascular program is 'available at the Kitchener hospital. However, Kitchener is closer to Wingham than London, so pressure would be taken off the London Health Centre. "This is a positive thing for the Wingham area," she said. come up with a logo would be appreciated. He suggested, "If we don't get some public response, we may have to get someone to develop one for us," but stated that it would be preferable to have ideas come from the Central Huron area. Referrals to the St. Mary's Hospital facility would be done on a case-by-case basis. Only those needing diagnostic services would be referred to Kitchener. Those for surgery would still be sent to London. Dr. Gear noted that currently doctors in Wingham would be determining who gets referred to Kitchener and who goes to London. Possibly within two years, Kitchener would have a full program available. She indicated the. St. Mary's facility has specific criteria which are required. Board member Marie McIntosh asked what ,the difference was between an ECG and an angiogram. Dr. Gear said an ECG (electrocardiograph) is a device used for the tracing of the heart. Patches are put around the chest area and and on other parts of the body. She noted that an angiogram is an invasive process which allows for an x-ray picture of the aorta.
