Staff had to work a double shift on several occasions and were also required to assist in areas outside of their own department. Phelan reported the renovations in the emergency department are almost complete and the waiting area in the x-ray department is getting a facelift. New signs are posted throughout the building and the new pictures on the second floor have been admired by patients, staff and visitors. Board member Verna Steffler said she liked the new signs. "They are very professional look- ing," she stated. According to Phelan, overall patient activity is really high, with all patient care areas open and full. She reported the occupancy rate is about 88 to 89 per cent' However, Chief of Staff Dr. Marie Gear reported there have been no flu cases in Wingham this year. She warned though there have been cases reported in the Waterloo .region. "If it's in Waterloo, it's going to get here," she added. The first wave Of a flu outbreak occurred at Christmas time last year, with a second wave occurring later on. "The first wave hasn't arrived yet," said Dr. Gear. "Maybe we'll only get one wave (this year)." Phelan said the newly formed gov- ernance councils are meeting month- ly, with one of the first projects being discussing the new accreditation guidelines. Twenty-two staff members are currently enrolled in a 12-week course on professional nursing and leadership offered by Conestoga College. The course is being offered in Wingham, with the third week now underway. The Bridges to Agriculture Program works with senior second- ary school students in Huron and Perth Counties who are interested in a career in agriculture. In fact, many of the students are interested in man- aging their parent's operation some day. -There is a need to open up the lines of communication on the topic between children and their parents. Bridges to Agriculture Co-ordinator Ron Ritchie, along with the Huron and Perth Federations of Agriculture, have put together an evening meet- ing highlighting three speakers on the topic. Three agricultural specialists from the accounting. insurance and bank- ing fields will give an introduction to farm succession based on their areas of expertise. The meeting is designed to set the stage for parents and secondary school age, or older children, to discuss the possibilities of succession, and what services are available to them to make a smooth transition. Although there are similar meet- ings being offered by other organiza- tions, this night is designed to be that first step in the transfer of the farm 'business within families. The presentation will last about an hour with a question period to fol- low. The meeting is free to all interest- ed, and will be held on Monday, Feb. 12, starting at 8:15 p.m. at Mitchell and District High School. Please RSVP to the OFA area office at 1- 800-511-1135 by Feb. 2.
