North Perth rejects hog plant
Oxford Packers Ltd. will be
looking for a new location for the
hog slaughtering plant after North
Perth council refused approval of the
site near Listowel.
A warning has been issued by the
Farm Safety Association after an
Ontario farmer was attacked and
killed by a rabid horse. Ontario has
long been a hotbed of rabies in North
America and farmers are asked to
watch for the symptoms in any of
their animals, and to take necessary
precautions.
Rabies is an infectious disease that
can spread from animals to humans.
The rabies virus causes the disease
by infecting nerves in animals and
people. Wild animals are the major
source of rabies. The major risk of
rabies comes from contact with the
saliva, body fluids, or tissue of
infected animals. Domestic animals
and humans can be infected usually
when bitten by a carrier of the
disease.
Some signs of rabies in animals
include: changes in an animal's
behaviour, general sickness,
problems swallowing, increased
drooling, and aggression. The
animals may wander aimlessly and
bite anything in their way.
Domestic animals and pets should
be vaccinated against rabies and kept

it was not the idea of the plant which

from running free where contact can
occur.
Contact with wild animals, dead or
sick animals should be avoided.
Contact local animal control
authorities if rabid animals are
spotted.
If you come into contact with a
rabid animal, seek medical attention
immediately. The incubation period
for rabies is generally from two to
eight weeks.

There had been objections from
neighbouring land owners.
Though Oxford Packers had asked
for written confirmation of the
decision, none had been received by
last week.
Oxford Packers is now seeking
land in West Perth. The company,
owned by Larry and Glenn Tulpin of
St. Williams mid Miriam Terpstra of
Acre T Farms, is looking at a four to
five hectare property northwest of
Mitchell near the community's
wastewater treatment plant.
The project could mean 50 jobs for
area residents.
