C. Semple, new fire chief
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
The Grey fire department is now
led by a new fire chief and deputy-
fire chief following the resignations
of Gary Earl and Stewart Steiss.
The transition board for Huron
East regretfully accepted the resig-
nations at the Dec, 18 meeting.
Calvin Semple and David Diehl,
were then appointed chief and
deputy-chief at the Dec. 28 meeting
of Grey Twp. council.
Grey Councillor Alvin McLellan
said both men indicated in their let-
ters of resignation that with amalga-
mation it was time for a change at
the department.
In personal conversations,
McLellan said he was told by Earl
that, though there had been issues
leading up to the municipal election
which were taken into consideration,
Earl felt it was time for a younger
and unified voice.
Steiss, McLellan said, believed his
role as deputy-chief may become
redundant with amalgamation and
the possible hiring of a fire chief for
the entire municipality, but also
believed it was time for someone
