this age group
' An exciting and active learning environment which
fosters exploration and discovery

Despite good effort

Lightning avenges loss to Buffalo
A good effort by the Brussels
Novices and strong netminding by
goalie Ryan Smith provided two
periods of exciting hockey when the
squad met Clinton at home, Jan. 13.
However, a lack of- offence and
penetrable defence in the third failed
to hold the game close at 2-1.
Smith was very steady in net
deflecting shots, pouncing on them
or grabbing them out of the air with
his glove. Joel Wilkinson helped in
front of the net in the first, pushing
a shot clear of Smith.
Clinton scored just as a Brussels
penalty ended, with 29 seconds left
in the frame.
The defence worked hard in the
second with Brianne Wheeler taking
a hit as she cleared the zone and
Cody Subject and Herbie Runstedler
hustling in the corners.
Clinton scored at 5:54 to up their
lead to two.
Subject had a great rush from his
own end but shot just wide. Robert
Cronin made a nice play, taking the
puck over the blueline then handing
off a soft pass to Brian Burgess
whose shot was stopped. Brendan
Stretton drew Brussels to within one
when he scored shorthanded at
1:46.
That would be as close as Brussels
would get, as the Clinton shooters
came out flying in the third period.
In spite of his efforts, Smith saw
six shotS hit the net behind him,
three times on shots over his head.
Brussels could not stop the con-
stant pressure from Clinton so they
had to settle for the 8-2 loss.'
Still stinging from last week's loss
to Buffalo, the Saugeen Maitland
Bantam Girls were eager to redeem
themselves on Jan. 14 at home in
Howick in a double-header against
Buffalo.
The fifst period remained score-
less as both teams felt each other out
with most of the play in the neutral
zone.
Late in the second period, Heather
Walker made a cross-ice pass to
Krista Cameron and raced in to tip
the return past the Buffalo goalie.
Terri Allen closed the door when the
visitors broke through the defence
on a breakaway to keep her team
ahead in the dying seconds of the

The visiting Zurich team tripled
the Blyth PeeWees tally when they
took to the ice, Jan. 11.
Zurich opened the scoring, popping
two in the first before Blyth got on
the board at 13:31 of the second
when Darcey Cook passed to Levi
Cook for the netter. Down 4-1 min-
utes later, Darren Austin brought
Blyth to within two at 8:46. Zurich
continued to hit the net, putting in
their fifth at 4:49.
A nice wrist shot by Kyle Nixon to
the top corner of the net on a great
feed from Brett Bean took the total to
5-3.

buzzer then added a pair in the third
for a 9-3 victory.
period.
All was going well in the third
until the Lightning ran into a rash of
penalties and Buffalo tied the game
with 1:34 left in the game on a
power-play.
Shots on goal were 23-11 in favour
of Buffalo in this 1-1 tie.
Buffalo opened the scoring early
in game two when a centering pass
was deflected past Allen. Saugeen
responded a minute later when
Jackie Zacher hit the back of the
Buffalo net with a seeing-eye shot
from the point that found its way
through a maze of players.
The Lightning struck a few min-

handed it off to Walker.
Cameron, who was in a great posi-
tion for the pass from Walker, nailed
the shot to put Saugeen in the
lead.
End-to-end action in period two
proved exciting with a game-saving
glove save by Allen on another
Buffalo breakaway to keep Saugeen
up by one goal.
The third period had close calls at
both ends and the Lightning held off
Buffalo to win 2-1.
Shots on goal were even at 13.
Solid play and team hustle by
Saugeen were the key factor in the
win and tie.
In net for The Highlanders were
Colton Routenburg and Sean
Vanberdan, sharing the job and mak-
ing some awesome saves.
The Highlanders are now done
regular season play and sit in second
or third place with 19 wins, seven
losses and five ties. Playoffs will be
starting in a couple of weeks.
