Much thanks
It was with a great deal of gratitude that Murray Campbell left, attended a recent meeting of
the 1st Blyth Scout group. Last November, while on a camping excursion with Scouts in the
Blyth area, the Wingham residents' son went careening on a bike headfirst into a tree. Now
that he has recovered, his parents wished to acknowledge the assistance he was given by the
Blyth Scouts at the scene, with a presentation of a certificate.
Light falls at Blyth PS
By Janice Becker
Citizen staff
A surprise awaited a junior class at
Blyth Public School when they
returned from a recess break
Thursday. A light had come crashing
to the floor,
Principal Willie Laurie said the
(Avon Maitland School) board
responded immediately, on site in
less than an hour to make repairs and
determine the cause of the fall.
Laurie said a lugnut on one stack
which attached suspended lights to
the ceiling had come loose. As it
pulled loose, the entire fixture came
down.
"We have been doing safety
inspections for things such as snow
load, ice and water, but this wasn't
something we could really inspect,"
she said.
Last Saturday afternoon began as a
typical day at my house. Then later
in the afternoon I became side-
tracked from everything by what I
had observed outside. At first I fig-
ured that it must be a black cat
crawling in the snow up on
Manning's hill and heading down to
our place. Then it was obvious that it

However, with an electrician on
site to repair the light, Lauzie said
they now know how to check. All
other fixtures in the school were
inspected.
She added that the light had prob-
ably been installed up to 20 years
ago and there were one-inch screws
holding the lights into wooden
beams. Longer screws were used to
replace all existing screws.
Mike Rau, plant manager for the
school board said the exposed wood-
en beams to which the fixtures are
attached were used in four schools in
the county.
The process to check all lights at
Grey Central, Hullett Central and
Usbome is continuing. No problems
have been found at the other schools,
he said.
A new fixture for Blyth is on order
and should be delivered this week.
did not have the proper type of tail to

I questioned my husband if there
was any possibility that groundhogs
are out in mid-January. Considering
that we were experiencing January
thaw, he said, it was a possibility.
Then we realized it was something
I thought only Granny and Jed from
The Beverly Hillbillies had, a pos-
sum. I later learned that two pos-
sums had previously been reported
in our neighbourhood and one of
Blyth's employees had already cap-
tured one.
Hopefully no more of these critters
will be around.

Fortunately, the Blyth children
were outside at the time of the inci-
dent and no one was injured.
Laurie said the rest of the day ran
smoothly for those students as they
had gym class then used the library
for other work.
"Everything worked out okay,"
she said.
