Magic and astrology theme of United service Magic and Astrology Bow to the Great Secret was the theme of the service at Blyth United Church on Jan. 7. Rev. Ernest Dow began by talking about the resurgence in interest in recent years in "magic, astrology, and the dark side of the supernatu- ral." He used as an example the immensely popular Harry Potter series for children. Rev. Dow discussed how they are getting mixed reviews from Christian commentators. He paral- leled the story of the Magi visiting the newborn baby Jesus, to how peo- ple can approach the issue of magic within present society. Rev. Dow used four aspects of guidance that are revealed in the magi story; the star, the scripture, their personal encounter with Jesus and their direct communication with God's will by a dream. The star was the tool that God used to grab the magi's attention. The magi were astologers and astronomers, so God used their back- ground to make them notice. "Besides the 'general' revelation from God's creation in nature (the star), there is added the 'special' rev- elation of God's prophetic word in scripture, inspired by the Holy spir- it," he said. The magi's personal You are invited to Worship Brussels at Fellowship 9:30 a.m. Worship Service 10:45 a.m. Christian Education Everyone Welcome Interim Pastor Art Byer 887-6388 r, encounter with Jesus had a signifi- cant affect on them. "They bowed down and worshipped him." Finally, it is recorded that the magi returned to their own country by another route "having been warned in a dream." The magi now received direct communication of God's will by a dream. Rev. Dow concluded, "Jesus is the Greatest Secret of all. It's not magic, but a miracle; Christ's power and love can be ours when we approach God through faith in him." From the Minister's Study By Joan 'Fuchlinksy Walton-Bluevale United Church Pastoral Charge You are a love song, beauty set to. music. You are a love song, I have chosen you. — Theresa Hucal In Joyce Rupp's book, The Cup of Our Life — A Guide for Spiritual Growth, she shares the memory of. people gathering to mourn the death of a friend's loving Italian mother. As the words of the song You Are A Love Song, wash over them, the sadness in the room lessens and they feel enveloped in love. Each person in the room is remembering how this woman had been a "love song" of God for the many people whose lives she touched. In ordinary, sim- ple ways, this woman had brought extraordinary songs of love to oth- ers. A wish for reassurance in the new year • • Can you accept who you are and what you mean to God and to this world? What does this mean for your relationships? For your life? My wish for this new year is that each of you can find hope and reas- surance in the message that you are God's beloved and precious in God's sight. The lectionary passage from Isaiah speaks to this phenomenon of being a "love song" of God. Basically it says: Don't be afraid. I have called you by name. I created you and you are mine. • You are precious in my eyes, and hon- oured and trusted. I love you. I am with you. What could this affirmation' of unconditional love mean for each of us if we were able to accept and embrace it? How could it affect our relationship with others if we under- stood ourselves and others as love songs of God? What would this mean to a woman who is in an abusive situation? To someone who feels responsible for the death of someone else? To a per- son in prison who regrets their crime? What does it mean for each of us, who as humans make mistakes and hurt others by words or actions? Imagine how our relationships and our lives could be transformed if we could truly see ourselves as God's beloved who is called by name. In her book, Rupp invites the read- er to think of a cup as a symbol of their unique self. Like a coffee or tea cup, each person has their own unique shape, size and personality. Like a. cup, their physical, psycho- logical and spiritual shape is distinc- tive. It is impossible to take someone else's personality, body or gifts and make it their own any more than a cup can change its colour or shape or size to match each person who drinks from it. The cup is an acceptable holder, no matter who drinks from it. It has value in itself. Each of us is a creation of God's love. We are beauty set to music. As Rupp says, we are one-of-a-kind and unique; meant to be a light of love in transforming the world. As we being this new year, I invite each of you to reflect on how God loves you unconditionally as you are. How does this make you feel?
