Brussels Livestock report
Light lambs range from $180 to $203
Total receipts at Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Jan. 6
were 1,307 head of cattle and 298
lambs and goats. On Tuesday, fed
steers and heifers sold $2 to $4
higher. Cows sold on a steady
market. On Thursday, veal sold at
sharply lower prices and the lambs
sold on a strong active trade with
new crop selling up to $210. On
Friday, all classes and weights of
stockers sold on a strong market.
There were 331 steers on offer
selling from $104 to $112 with sales
to $122.75. One blue steer consigned
by Kada Farms, Bluevale, weighing
1,455 lbs. sold to Norwich Packers
for $122.75. Their overall offering of
twelve steers averaged 1,467 lbs.

Sereda, Crediton, consigned one
black steer weighing 1,510 lbs.
selling to Dominion Meats for $118.
His overall offering of forty steers
averaged 1,529 lbs. selling for an

health of our water resources, the
Ontario Rural Council is hosting a
public forum. The theme for this
forum is "Water Quality in Rural
Ontario ... Where do we stand?"
The afternoon forum will take place
on Monday, Jan. 29 from I to 4:30
p.m. at One Stone Road W. in
Guelph.
From watersheds and nutrient
management, to health issues related
to water-borne diseases, speakers
will outline the provincial water
situation.
"This forum provides an
opportunity to create linkages," says
Wayne Caldwell, chair of the
Ontario Rural Council, "we are
bringing together people with
different perspectives to discuss the
issues and learn from each other.
Participants will have the chance to
understand better the status of
Ontario's water."
As stewards of water resources,
rural residents will hear reasons for
optimism and concern. Unresolved

overall offering of thirteen heifers
averaged 1,277 lbs, selling for an
average of $113.21.
Fourteen heifers consigned by
Mux Lea Farms, Woodstock,
averaging 1,340 lbs. sold for an
average of $111.48 with one blonde
heifer weighing 1,360 lbs. selling for
Ryding Regency for $115.
Russell Simpson, Glencoe,
consigned two black heifers
averaging 1,210 lbs. selling , for
$112.50. Seven heifers consigned by
Herman Van Der Borgh, Listowel,
averaging 1,415 lbs. sold for an
average of $112.23 with sales to
$112.75. Four black heifers
in this province will also be
identified.
A panel of speakers will present
the current water situation from four
perspectives. Lorrie Minshall of the
Grand River Conservation Authority
will explore watersheds as
fundamental systems for surface and
groundwater; Dr. Doug Joy, from the
Ontario Rural Waste-Water Centre
will address the treatment and supply
of Ontario's water; the Ontario
Environmental Coalition's Paul
Verkley will outline runoff and
nutrient management issues as they
relate to agriculture and -water
quality; and Dr. Michael Clarke, a
microbiologist at the University of
Western Ontario, will examine
health issues related to water-borne
disease.

and provincial representatives, and
groups or individuals interested in
learning more about the current

averaged 1,318 lbs. selling for an
average of $105.42. Kalvin Fischer,
Bluevale, consigned five heifers
averaging 1,302 lbs. selling for an
average of $104.29 with sales to
$110.50.
There were 230 cows on offer. DI
and D2 cows sold $60 to $65 .with
sales to $75; D3, $55 to $60; D4, $45
to $55. One red cow consigned by
Jeff Klaver, Dublin, weighing 1,110
lbs. selling for $76. Groenberg
Farms, Lucknow, consigned one
holstein cow weighing 1,435 lbs.
selling for $72.50. Ross
McCormick, Inwood, consigned one
red cow weighing 1,125 lbs. selling
for $69.
There were nine bulls on offer
selling from $64 to $75 with sales to
$94.50. Donald R. Scott, Holyrood,
consigned one limousin bull

said Caldwell. "From primary
producers and consumers, to tourists
and cottagers, people want to ensure
the quality of Ontario's water."
The Ontario Rural Council brings
together over 35 organizations,
private corporations and government
representatives who shale a
commitment to building strong rural
organizations and communities. The
council provides a unique and
important opportunity for multi-
sector co-operation within the rural
community. Members identify
issues, and collaborate to develop
innovative solutions and strengthen
rural voices.

, The three Huron County
commodity groups will be holding
the first combined annual meeting on
Wednesday, Jan. 17. This meeting
will take place in the Goderich
Township Hall starting at 8:30 a.m.
All three organizations will elect
their representatives for their
provincial organizations, review
their financial statements for 2000
and receive the current directors
reports.
The guest speaker will be Marty
Huzevka, Grain and Oil Seed
Marketing Manager of Hensall
District Co-op. His topic will be
"Managing and Marketing Identity
With the push on by the provincial
government to promote Ontario as a
four:•season tourist area, new
legislation has been implemented to
ensure safety and sustainability of
the province's thousands of
kilometres of snowmobile trails.
The act to promote snowmobile
trail sustainability and enhance
safety and enforcement deals with
not only the safety of those riding the
trails, but the act also meets the
needs of tourist operators and
snowmobile clubs.
The enforcement section of the bill
allows for fines to be levied against
riders with a suspended licence,
inappropriate insurance or lack of a
- permit or registration.

There will be an opportunity for
resolutions to be brought forward for
each of the provincial annual
meetings of each commodity group.
This is grassroot input into the
direction for the organizations.

Police will be able to stop
snowmobiles in the course of their
duties.
Snowmobilers must wear their
helmets both on and off the trails and
highways and must meet motorcycle
standards. All sleds must have at
least one working headlight, to be
used at all times.
There must be reflective material
on all trailers or devices towed by
snowmobiles.
The legislation reinforces the
current user-pay system which
requiring all riders on Ontario
Federation of Snowmobile Club
trails to have permits. Traditional
and business users may be eligible
for special exemptions.
