Today over 300,000 Canadians, or
one in 1-3 people over the age of 65,
have Alzheimer's disease and related
dementias. This means over half of
the people in Canada know some-
body with Alzheimer's disease and
that one in four people see
Alzheimer's disease amongst their
family members.
The disease will affect more than
double that number, or three-quarters
of a million Canadians, by 2031.
Preliminary analysis estimate that
there will be 60,000 new cases of
dementia per year.
"Canada could be facing an
Alzheimer's disease crisis in this

JOHN LEISHMAN
John Leishman of RR6,
Woodstock, passed away peacefully
at Woodstock General Hospital on
Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in his
56th year.
Mr. Leishman was the beloved
husband of Millie McCooey. He was
the dear father of Angela and Lisa
millennium," said Steve Rudin,
executive director of the Alzheimer
Society of Canada, "and we have to
act now to prevent it. With vast
numbers of people likely to get this
disease," Rudin says, "it's even more
urgent for us to find a cause and cure
for Alzheimer's disease and develop
better methods for diagnosis, care-
giving and providing the needed
services specific to people with this
disease."
Huron County is not immune to
the rising number of people affected
by Alzheimer's and other forms of
dementia. Dementia projections for
Huron County estimate a rise from
804 persons affected by dementia in
2001 to 1,204 persons by 2028.
Caregivers are eager for any help
they can get, including day pro-
and stepfather of David, Wayne,
Gary and their spouses. He was the
beloved grandfather of Sean, Alex
and Rylee and step-grandfather to
Melissa, Melinda and Cheryl. He
will be sadly missed by his parents
Jim and Ruby Leishman of Clinton.
Mr. Leishman was the dear brother
of Frank and Joan Leishman' of
Dashwood, Ann and Terry Bauer of
Whitechurch, Jim and Marie
Leishman of Grand Bend, Jean
Leishman of Belgrave, Lois

Mitchum of South Carolina, Joan
and Danny De Felice of Toronto,
Allan and Waneta Leishman of
Belgrave. He as survived as well by
many nieces, nephews and friends.
John was predeceased by his
brother Bobby Joe.
Funeral service was held at the
grams, respite, overnight and week-
end care. All three levels of the
Society (National, Provincial and
Local) work together to provide sup-
port groups, counselling, informa-
tion, services and programs, such as
the national Alzheimer Wandering
Registry, which helps people return
home after wandering.
Caregivers are also seeking home-
care hours that mesh with their work
schedules and increase with the dis-
ease's severity — and workers spe-
cially trained to care for people with
dementia. The Alzheimer Society of
Huron County in partnership with
Fanshawe College will be offering
courses for the Dementia Studies
Certificate Program in Huron
County this year.
