THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2001. Obituaries GORDON DOBIE Gordon Dobie, formerly of Auburn, passed away at Maitland Manor in Goderich on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000. He was in his 84th year. He was the beloved husband of the late Beth (Hollaway) Dobie and the dear father of William and Dianne Dobie, Gerald and Marie Dobie, all of Goderich, Jannett and Don Rae of Listowel and Ross and Gail Dobie of Auburn. Mr. Dobie was the loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grand- son, Michael Dobie and sisters Jean Andrews, Margaret Russell and Mary Kinahan. The family received friends at the McCallum and Palla Funeral Home, Cambria Road at East StreL t, By Alexandra Beasse Public Education Co-ordinator, Alzheimer Society of Huron County Today over 300,000 Canadians, or one in 1-3 people over the age of 65, have Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This means over half of the people in Canada know some- body with Alzheimer's disease and that one in four people see Alzheimer's disease amongst their family members. The disease will affect more than double that number, or three-quarters of a million Canadians, by 2031. Preliminary analysis estimate that there will be 60,000 new cases of dementia per year. "Canada could be facing an Alzheimer's disease crisis in this Goderich on Wednesday, Dec. 27 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Rev. Donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church would be grate- fully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy, JOHN LEISHMAN John Leishman of RR6, Woodstock, passed away peacefully at Woodstock General Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in his 56th year. Mr. Leishman was the beloved husband of Millie McCooey. He was the dear father of Angela and Lisa millennium," said Steve Rudin, executive director of the Alzheimer Society of Canada, "and we have to act now to prevent it. With vast numbers of people likely to get this disease," Rudin says, "it's even more urgent for us to find a cause and cure for Alzheimer's disease and develop better methods for diagnosis, care- giving and providing the needed services specific to people with this disease." Huron County is not immune to the rising number of people affected by Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Dementia projections for Huron County estimate a rise from 804 persons affected by dementia in 2001 to 1,204 persons by 2028. Caregivers are eager for any help they can get, including day pro- and stepfather of David, Wayne, Gary and their spouses. He was the beloved grandfather of Sean, Alex and Rylee and step-grandfather to Melissa, Melinda and Cheryl. He will be sadly missed by his parents Jim and Ruby Leishman of Clinton. Mr. Leishman was the dear brother of Frank and Joan Leishman' of Dashwood, Ann and Terry Bauer of Whitechurch, Jim and Marie Leishman of Grand Bend, Jean Leishman of Belgrave, Lois Leishman of Toronto, June and Don Mitchum of South Carolina, Joan and Danny De Felice of Toronto, Allan and Waneta Leishman of Belgrave. He as survived as well by many nieces, nephews and friends. John was predeceased by his brother Bobby Joe. Funeral service was held at the grams, respite, overnight and week- end care. All three levels of the Society (National, Provincial and Local) work together to provide sup- port groups, counselling, informa- tion, services and programs, such as the national Alzheimer Wandering Registry, which helps people return home after wandering. Caregivers are also seeking home- care hours that mesh with their work schedules and increase with the dis- ease's severity — and workers spe- cially trained to care for people with dementia. The Alzheimer Society of Huron County in partnership with Fanshawe College will be offering courses for the Dementia Studies Certificate Program in Huron County this year. ANTHONY VANDEN ASSEM Anthony Vanden Assem of Desboro passed away at London Health Sciences Centre, University Campus on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000. He was 65. Born on Oct. 12, 1935 in the Netherlands, he was the beloved husband of Lee (Manto) Vanden Assem and dear father of Aaron of Desboro and Rachel and Janet at home. He was the dear brother of Margaret and husband Henry Jongsma, Brampton, Ann and hus- band Piet Reinsma of Benmiller, Corrie and husband Alvin Wallace of Blyth, Tine and husband Henk Geilstra of the Netherlands, Nick Vanden Assem and wife Nancy of cialized courses is available at the Society office. Visitation was at the McFadden Funeral Home in Chesley. Funeral service was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sullivan on Dec. 6. Pastor Sheila Fletch officiated. Spring interment will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ted Hunter, Murray Emke, Peter Boelke, Ewald Rothmaier, Lawrence Reinsma and Boris Wallace.
