From the Minister's Study
Finding a resolute solution
By Pastor Ernest Dow,
Blyth United Church
Resolute (adj.): determined, decid-
ed, bold, not vacillating, unshrink-
ing, firm of purpose.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary
definition would put steel in our
backbone when it comes to making
New Year's resolutions. Many peo-
ple make them only to break them
before the month is out. We know
there are changes it would be good
for us to make; how can we become
more resolute, more successful in
our follow-through?
God's good news for us is that help
is available if we will rely on Him.
"Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in Him, and He will act... Our
steps are made firm by the LORD,
when He delights in our way;
though we stumble, we shall not fall
headlong, for the LORD holds us by
the hand." (Psalm 37:5,23-24
NRSV)
When we truly yield to God and
consciously invite Jesus to be Lord
of our life, He helps us become more
purposeful, able to say yes to what is'
best and turn away from the rest.
"For the grace of God that brings sal-
vation...teaches us to say `No' to
ungodliness and worldly passions,
and to live self-controlled, upright
and godly lives in this present age."
(Titus 2:11-12 NIV)
New calendars and datebooks pro-
vide us with an opportunity to sched-
ule into our lives our real values, not
just what we suppose we believe.
Stephen Covey (The Seven Habits of
Highly Effective People) advises us
to begin with a personal mission
statement which identifies our
"roles" (individual, spouse, parent,
manager, community etc.) and our
"goals".
In planning each week, begin with
your roles; identify goals associated
with each of those; and from there
set priorities for various days.
In my own case, as one of God's
adopted "sons" through faith in
Jesus, I want to set aside time each
day (privately) and each week (in
worship with others) to nurture my
relationship with God and personal
growth.
As a husband it is important to
schedule regular "date" nights in
consultation with my wife, and write
them in pen, not pencil! As a father I
will plan to take time out with my
children for games or lunch together,
one-on-one.
After these most important roles
The Christmas meeting of
Melville Women's Guild met at the
home of Dona Knight on Tuesday,
Dec. 19 with 12 members present.
The hostess presided over the
meeting in the absence of the presi-
dent. She opened the meeting with a
Christmas poem followed by the
singing of the carol, Silent Night.
Everyone contributed to the pro-
gram with stories, poems, etc.
Jeanne Ireland told the story of the
candy cane, then everyone wished
the person beside them a Merry
Christmas and presented them with a
candy cane.
Leona Armstrong read the minutes
of the November meeting and Mrs.
Ireland gave the treasurer's report.
Jean Bewley and Mrs. Ireland will
be in charge of the January meeting
starting the year off with potluck
supper in the church parlour at 6:30
p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16.
The roll call was answered by
everyone telling their plans for
Christmas Day.
Mrs. Bewley conducted a contest.
are carved into my datebook, then I
can begin to allocate slots to other
roles such as work, obligations to
other relatives and organizations,
community service, etc.
Under "Habit 2: Begin with the
End in Mind", Covey advises,
"Roles and goals give structure and
organized direction to your personal
mission... Just identifying the vari-
ous areas of your life and the two or
three important results you feel you
should accomplish in each area to
move ahead gives you an overall per-
spective of your life and a sense of
direction."
In "Habit 3: Put First Things First"
he continues, "Having identified
roles and set goals, you can translate
each goal to a specific day of the
week, either as a priority item or,
even better, as a specific appoint-
ment. You can also check your annu-
al or monthly calendar for any
appointments you may have previ-
ously made and evaluate their impor-
tance in the context of your goals,
transferring those you decide to keep
to your schedule and making plans to
reschedule or cancel others."
Perhaps the reader will, like anoth-
er (anonymous) author, draw
strength to remain resolute from var-
ious heroes of faith in the past:
New Year's Resolutions - For Any
and Every Day
Each person was to see how many
five-letter or more words they could
make from the letters in Silent Night.
I will, like Paul, forget those things
which are behind and press for-
ward.
I will, like David, lift up mine eyes
unto the hills from whence comes
help.
I will, like Abraham, trust implicit-
ly in my God.
I will, like Enoch, walk in daily fel-
lowship with my Heavenly Father. •
I will, like Jehoshaphat, prepare my
heart to seek God.
I will, like Moses, choose rather to
suffer than enjoy the pleasures of
sin.
I will, like Daniel, commune with
my God at all times.
I will, like'Job, be patient under all
circumstances.
I will, like Gideon, stand firm even
though my friends be few.
I will, like Aaron, uphold the hands
of my spiritual leader.
I will, like Isaiah, consecrate
myself to God's work. .
I will, like Andrew, strive to lead
my brother to a closer walk with
Christ.
I will, like John, lean upon the
bosom of the Master.
I will, like Stephen, manifest a for-
giving spirit toward all who hurt
me.
I will, like the Heavenly Host, pro-
claim the message of peace and
good will.
Mrs. Knight distributed the gifts
for the gift exchange and lunch was
served.
