E ntertainment Festival
Blyth
seeks
new star Stratford
sums up
season
The 46th annual general meeting
of the Stratford Shakespearean
Festival Foundation of Canada was
held in the auditorium of the
Festival Theatre at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, Dec. 12.
General Manager Antoni
Cimolino reviewed the Festival's
financial position following the
46th season. He announced that the
Festival's consolidated financial
statements reported a net revenue
of $506,298. From this net revenue,
a contribution of $428,232 was
made toward the stability fund,
resulting in overall operating
income for the Stratford Festival's
1998 season of $78,066.
"Our 1998 season ended with
gross box-office revenue of
$23,591,730," said Cimolino, "the
highest in the Festival's history.
Attendance during the season was
523,015, representing 71 per cent
of capacity, and up by nearly
20,000 over the year before."
Cimolino gave credit for the
success of the season to Artistic
Director Richard Monette's
"uncanny ability to make classical
theatre interesting and entertaining
to almost everyone."
Cimolino thanked Festival staff
and the Board of Governors, led by
Board President George Taylor, for
their level of commitment and
energy before thanking retiring
Board members for their services
and welcoming incoming members.
He concluded, "We, the Festival
staff and the artists whose vision
we realize, have you all — patrons,
members, governors, volunteers, all
— on our side. Together we can
make this 'rough magic' of the
theatre — this great theatre — grow
even stronger-and cast an even
more potent spell upon our
imaginations."
Monette summed up the
Festival's 1998 season as one "of
incredible variety, exploring a wide
range of repertoire and
demonstrating the astonishing
versatility of our company and the
imaginative diversity of our
directors" and, most importantly, as
a year of "exemplary outreach for
the Stratford Festival." He formally
welcomed Cimolino to his new
post as general manager."

of the Nasty Habits performance in Blyth, Dec. 19.

JONATHAN TAYLOR THOMAS
The Blyth Festival is searching
for a young actor to play a major
role in Big Box, a new comedy by
Dave Carley, set to open on July 2
as the second production of the
1999 Silver Anniversary Season.
Director James Roy, the
Festival's founder, hopes to cast a
local lad in the very demanding
role of a precocious sharp-tongued
son of the most inept private
detective in Canada.
"We're looking for a very
talented boy with superb comic
timing, whose voice is showing
signs of cracking, and with peach
fuzz about to appear on his upper
lip" said Anne Chislett, the
Festival's artistic director.
Rehearsals for Big Box begin on
June 7 and the production runs
until Aug. 28, so there is a very
large time commitment expected
from the young man who is chosen.
It's a real summer job — with lots of
hard work and long hours, said
Chislette. Only boys who are very
serious about wanting to act should
try out, and only with their parents'
permission.
Auditions will be held at the
Festival offices on Jan. 9. (Snow
date Jan. 16). Those who wish an
appointment should telephone Fran
at 523-9300.
Big Box is a very funny,
somewhat risque comedy about big
box retailing and its effect on small
town main streets. There's no
swearing, but even G-d gets
involved in the fun, so families
who are sensitive to what might be
perceived as "irreverence" or
"naughtiness" may wish to
discourage their children from
auditioning.
Mr. Earle McLeod and Ms.
Ruth McLeod and Mr. and
Mrs. Melvin McArter are
pleased to announce the
forthcoming marriage of their
children
Tanya Irene Muriel
to
Brian Robert
The wedding will take place
on Thursday, December 31,
1998 at Brussels United
Church. Open reception at
B.M. & G. Community Centre.
Brian and Tanya would like to
request no jeans please!
