PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1998.
By Rev. Cecil Wittich
Blyth United Church
Someone once said the church is
only for the weak. What is meant by
"the weak"? Is it the weak in body
or mind?
Is it the timid and the anxious? Is
it those who are weak economi-
cally, socially or politically? Is it
those who are not able to cope with
life and need some extra power to
assist them?
If these are the ones who are
meant by "the weak", then I am glad
that the church is known for being
open to them.
Jesus once said, "Blessed are the
poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3)
Again, He said, "Blessed are the
meek, for they shall inherit the
earth." (Matthew 5:5) Another time,
He said, "Unless you turn and
become like children, you will never
enter the kingdom of heaven."
(Matthew 18: 3).
The Apostle Paul, writing to the
church said, "Consider your call; not
many of you were wise according to
worldly standards, not many were
powerful, not many were of noble
birth; but God chose what is foolish
in the world to shame the wise; God
chose what is weak in the world to
shame the strong; God chose what is
low and despised in the world, even
things that are not, to bring nothing
things that are, so that no human
being might boast in the presence of
God." (1 Corinthians 1: 26-29).
The church is not only for the so-
called weak. The church is for
everyone. All of us are weak in the
presence of God. We may think we
can live life independent of God.
Have we ever thought that we had
no say regarding our coming into
this world, and that we will have no
say when it comes to leaving this
world?
There is One who made us and
the same One, in the end, will be
our judge. Life here and in the
future is incomplete without God.
We have been made by Him and
for Him. In relation to Him, we see
our true weakness and our true
strength. The church is for all.

UCW
celebrates
season
The UCW celebrated Christmas
by having a potluck meal together
last week. The downstairs of the
church, was decorated by Barb
Durrell and Audrey Hackwell.
There were 41 guests and members
tilled to the brim as they sampled a
wide array of casseroles and
desserts.
Rev. James Murray and family
were invited to join the group and
were then presented with a gift.
Gloria WiThee opened the
worship part of the service by
leading the singing of Christmas
carols. Marie 'McGavin played the
piano for the carols. Audrey
Hackwell read Psalm 98 and read
about how the carol Joy to the
World came to be written.
Judy Emmrich did some readings
called, "Christmas Journeys" and
"Christmas is a time for singingY
Gloria read, "Talents" then sang,
My Heart Will Go On and Oh Holy
Night.
Marie McGavin took over the
business part of the meeting.
