Huron Bruce NDPs elect Johnstone president
At its annual meeting on Nov. 20
at the Lucknow Town Hall, the
Huron Bruce NDP Riding
Association elected a new slate of
officers to its executive. The new
president of the Association will be
Jan Johnstone. Past president and
town councillor for the town of
Goderich, Lynda Rotteau, will
serve as Huron vice-president for
the coming year, while former
candidate for Bruce and CAW
member Len Hope will serve as the
vice-president for Bruce.
Since the Riding Association
operates as both a provincial and a
federal association, the provincial
treasurer is George Richer, and
federal treasurer will be Fran
McQuail. Willi Laurie, former
Huron Women Teachers'
Association president and
elementary school principal, will be
recording secretary, while the
membership secretary is Tony
McQuail, past side to the former
Minister of Agriculture, former

Huron County Board of Education
trustee and contact with many
organizations in the agricultural
community.
Members at large include Ross
Hemingway, former candidate for
Bruce Bob Emmerson, former MPP
Paul Klopp, and Gerry McDonnell,
a secondary teacher and past vice-
president of the Huron branch of
the Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation. This group
represents a wealth of background
in the political, agricultural,
municipal, union and educational
areas, and will certainly bring much
expertise to the upcoming election
campaign.
Other topics on the agenda of the
meeting included election
strategizing and information on the
new election regulations. A
shortened election campaign and
the change to the amount of
campaign dollars spent will result
in a more American style election
campaign where huge amounts of
dollars will be spent by corporate
sponsored parties. The
Conservative war chest is already
being spent on government
commercials and on the latest anti-
McGinty campaign. This is a very
Americanized political campaign
with millions of dollars being spent
attacking the opposition party -
much like the Republican anti-
Democrat campaign in the last
American election.
Ian Bawden, an organizer from
Windsor was at the meeting to
address the group on these
concerns. In order to equalize the
inequities caused by the
deregulation of campaign dollars
spent, the CAW and other unions
have committed monies to release
CAW members to target critical
ridings and to act as riding
organizers.
Priority setting for Huron-Bruce
included a need to focus on the
agricultural community, continued
focus on education standards and
funding issues as well as on Bill
160, and a continued emphasis on
health and services.
The party will also emphasize the
fact that the government is cutting
back on services and supports that
the elderly (in an aging population)
will increasingly depend upon.
Another priority is to reach out to
the small business community.
Announcements were made
regarding possible candidates'
decisions to run. Klopp and
Johnstone, after long consideration,
both declined and McQuail stated
his decision to run for the
nomination. The meeting ended
with an address by McQuail.
The official nomination meeting
for the new Huron Bruce Provincial
Riding will be held on Feb. 5 at the
McKay Centre for Seniors on
North and Nelson Streets in
Goderich. For those interested in
supporting the Tony McQuail
campaign, a planning meeting will
take place on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at
the home of Mary Gregg, 34
Wellington St., in Goderich. All are
welcome to attend.
