Rev. Ross plays for Bible study
On Nov. 30, a sumptuous pot
luck dinner was enjoyed by UCW
-Member, their husbands, friends
and former members. This was
followed by entertainment with
Marilyn Verbeek as organizer and
MC.
Jessie Naylor had the marked
chair. She was a member in Auburn
for a number of years and is now in
Goderich. She received a gift.
Marilyn Verbeek gave a
humorous reading on "Room for
Pie", Elva Armstrong also had
everyone laughing with "Santa
Claus". Margaret Bakker and Rev.
Ross lit the advent candles for the
occasion. The beautiful old hymn
Star of the East was played by
Marjorie McDougall.
A play on Jesus's birth was
performed by Laura Mae Chamney
as the Virgin Mary, Teresa
Roetiscinder as Joseph, Grace
Cartwright as Martha and Elva
Armstrong as the angel who came
to Mary.
Bernice Anderson spoke on "I
Remember Christmas", which
brought back memories
A gift to Rev. Ross for his
teaching and preaching was
presented by Ethel Ball, Presbytry
representative.
For the final Bible Study meeting
of this season on Dec. 1, Betsey
Verwey invited the group to her
home. There was an excellent
attendance.
Rev. Paul Ross played his
keyboard and everyone sang.
Betsey Verwey sang in Latin which
she sang in the choir in her
homeland and Teresa Roetiscinder
sang in Dutch!
After lunch was served by the
hostess, the study hour began,
starting at chapter 21 to the end of
the book of Acts. Members
followed Paul's trip on to
Jerusalem. Paul is arrested because
they considered him disobeying the
Jewish laws. Some people rioted
against him and others stood by his
side.
They planned to gather evidence
and kill him. But Paul insisted that
he be taken to Italy and on the way
there they were in bad weather
aboard ship. Paul spoke to the
captain and warned that the
weather would get worse. He did
not listen and their ship broke up.
They made it to the island of Malta,
where they were welcomed. While
there, Paul cured the ill. Though he
was a prisoner in Rome he told all
that he had only done good.
Finally he was released. He was
given a rented house and for the
next two years he preached and
cured.
A gift was presented to Rev.
Ross by the group and he was
thanked for his inspiring teaching
and preaching.
Knox United
prepares for
White Sunday
Organ prelude welcomed all to
the service at 10 a.m., Dec. 6 in
Knox United.
Next Sunday is White Gift
Service and also the Christmas
pageant. Soup and sandwich lunch
will follow with proceeds of this
for the Native Healing Fund.
The Advent Candle was lit and
Advent prayer said in unison.
The Bible lesson from the Old
Testament was from Isaiah 11. In
this it is told of the Spirit of the
Lord and wisdom, understanding,
counsel, might and knowledge.
Peace comes to earth and the Word
of God is followed.
New Testament reading, by Rev.
Paul Ross, was from Luke 1 -
Mary, Mother of Jesus, went to
visit her cousin Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was filled with the Spirit
and told Mary that the fruit of her
womb was blessed and that
wonders would happen.
Rev. Ross's message was on
"Peace and Joy", a continuance of
the Bible readings.
Walkerburns
sign cards
On Dec. 2. at 1:30 p.m., a lovely
autumn day, Ila Cunningham
welcomed all but two members of
the Walkerburn Club to her home.
Everyone welcomed Sherry Blay to
the fold and hopes she will be able
to be with them regularly.
First on the agenda was the
signing of Christmas cards for
former members and friends. Plans
were made for gifts for some
people.
Roll Call was answered with gifts
for the Children's Aid.
A new date for the meeting was
discussed, probably the second
Wednesday of the month.
Martha Daer was the lucky
winner of the draw. She is going to
Goderich for the winter months so
_members were delighted to see her
win and look forward to her
coming home in the spring.
A miscellaneous sale was held.
Betsey Verwey was the capable
auctioneer. Proceeds will be
donated to the Salvation Army.
