For Teens, By Teens
Decision-making fills teenagers' lives
By Janet Bosma
Decisions, decisions, decisions.
How to make good decisions.
Teenagers are at a stage in life
when many decisions need to be
made.
Should I have a part-time job in
addition to school? What should I
do this weekend? Am I going to
study for that killer test or go out to
the movies with my friends? What
am I going to do after high school
and what do I want to do with my
life?
By Becky Nethery
Have you ever been driving
down a road and saw a Mennonite
horse and buggy and noticed the
blinders that are on each side of the
horse's head? The purpose of this is
so that the horses can only see
directly in front of them.
Just like horses have blinders, so
do people.
I find that there are many teens
that live their lives worrying about
petty things that are irrelevant to
life. The world is not going to end
if you don't get your "Tommy
Hilfiger" jeans, or your $100
"OKELEY" sunglasses.
I'm not trying to insult people
who have those things; I am just
By Amy Crawford
"I don't understand!"
"I can't!"
These are some of the most
disheartening words to hear a child
say when working on schoolwork.
It's awful when children feel there
is no hope for them to understand.
Children have the most maleable
minds, no inhibitions, and are just
starting to learn the basics which
they will fall back on the rest of
their lives.
My inspiration for this article
came when I sat down with the boy
I babysit and worked on his
multiplication tables. I remember
when I was just starting to learn
them, they were hard and often
These arc all choices that many
teenagers have. Right now, as a
Grade 12 student, I am deciding
what I want to do after high school.
I have decided that I want to go
into the field of accounting. But
that does not mean that I have my
entire life planned out.
Do I want to study far away from
home or close to home? Do I want
to live in residence or do I want to
rent my own apartment with a
friend or two? And most impor-
tantly, how am I going to fund this
saying don't get so caught up in
material items so that they are all
you think about or your main goal
in life.
Did you know that in parts of
Africa, people constantly live in
fear of being captured by slave
traders and sold into slavery?
Or what about the girls as young
as nine who are sold into a life of
prostitution by their own fathers in
India and Nepal.
There are a lot of people on this
planet who are living in their own
world, where they see only what
. they want to and don't realize that
there is a much bigger picture.
I sometimes struggle with my
blinders but then I hear a story on
many nights resulted in repetition
and memorization.
After all that work I learned a
few tricks to help myself. I was
surprised at how he grasped the
concepts I was presenting to him. It
was a great feeling. I decided to
teach his sister the same. Although
things didn't go as fast, or as easily,
she learned and understood in her
way.
It made the children feel good
when they could grasp what I was
showing them. It made me feel
good that I could teach them.
I wonder, does every teacher feel
this accomplishment or have they
been reduced to "passing along
information" instead. of teaching?
Have children become statistics
major step in my life?
These are all questions that I
have given quite a bit of thought to.
With university applications
being due, I have narrowed my
choices down to three. But what if
I am not accepted at any of these
schools to which I have applied?
What then? Will I take a year off
to work or will I go back to high
school to get some more credits and
improve my marks?
I really do hope that I am accept-
ed at these schools and do not have
the news about a mud slide in
South America that left many dead
or homeless. Or I read a story about
malnourished children in India
whose parents sacrifice all of their
food to their Hindu Gods, but still
their children's stomachs stay
empty.
I hope that you see how
important it is to take off your
blinders and open your eyes to the
real world. Teens often become so
stuck on themselves that they leave
their own blinders on and don't
think twice about other people.
Please realize how important it is
to take off your blinders and open
your eyes and see how things really
are in the real world.
instead of young minds striving for
knowledge?
When I told the young girl I look
after that I was going to show her
some tricks so she wouldn't have to
count on her fingers all the time,
she told me she wasn't allowed to
use anything but her fingers. That
one sentence sent me into a tirade
of "you can do anything you put
your mind to's" and "you have the
power to learn anything you want."
I want to teach these two children
so much and even though I still
have much more to learn I can
teach them what I know now and
hopefully they will remember a
long time from now and realize my
tricks really did help them.
to think about these issues again
next year. But another thing I must
think about is how I am going to
pay for this endeavor of mine.
Though a part-time job will help
a bit, there are also little things that
take up my money right now...food,
movies and other entertainment.
So where am I going to get this
much-needed cash in order to
attend university?
My savings will definitely be
used, but from there, where will I
go?
My parents, like many parents of
people I have talked to, have been
very vague in saying how much
they will be helping out. So this
leaves me to look at other
resources. OSAP and other student
loans are available, but I do not
know a lot about these things.
More information will become
available when the time comes, I'm
sure. But even if I do receive these
loans, what will I do with this
large debt-load when I finish?
With more and more students
graduating from university and not
finding a job, this too becomes a
scary thought. But the issue for me
right now is making the best deci-
sions about where to go to school
next fall and how to achieve the
best marks I can.
Teenagers go through a lot of
stress making decisions. But our
life is not meant to be all stress.
We need to have some fun too!!
So my word of advice is,idon't
get too stressed out. If you get
upset about these issues, forget
about them for a while and go do
something fun! And good luck
making decisions!
