Seniors clubs offer community and social involvement
Being together
The local seniors groups are vital community organizations, which not
opportunities for socialization, but in many cases extend good works to others.

Walden also encourages more
village and area seniors to attend
the monthly get-together. "We real-
ly look forward to it and we would
like to have more."
The Auburn Silver Tops meet the
third Wednesday of each month
and welcome members 55 and
over. Their Christmas dinner is
planned for Dec. 9.

From socializing to raising funds
to benefitting others, local seniors
are staying active and involved in
their communities.
One of the largest seniors groups,
totalling 65 members, meets in Bel-
grave on the first Friday of each
month at the community centre.
"People look forward to it. It is a
good afternoon, to get together for
fellowship for a couple hours," said
President Lorne Campbell.
The potluck lunch at 1:30 p.m.
begins a wonderful day for those
who gather. The afternoon is filled
with card games, guest speakers or
entertainment.
But, for the Belgrave seniors
socializing is not the only thing on
their agenda.
Twice monthly, on the second
and fourth Fridays, they host
euchre parties and run Wednesday
evening euchre games at Belgrave
Women's Institute Hall.
The Wednesday night games are
fundraisers for local charitable
organizations which benefit the
whole area, said Campbell. Monies
earned helped furnish the hall and
purchase a piano for the communi-
ty centre.
A popular event for all seniors'
groups is the catered dinner
planned for Christmas, which will
be held Dec. 4.
While the club draws mostly
from Belgrave and the immediate
area, Campbell said they do have
former Belgrave residents attending
who now live in Wingham. Anyone
over the age of 60 is welcome to
attend.
Louise Bosman serves as secre-
tary and Mary Taylor as treasurer
for the group.
The Happy Gang Seniors in Lon-
desboro, which has-been meeting
for years, gathers on the last
Wednesday of each month, at 12:30
p.m. at Londesboro UCW Hall.
Not only is the hall their meeting
place but also the cause for which
they raise money through monthly
euchre tournaments. Threatened
with destruction a few years ago,
the seniors, along with other local
groups raised funds to not only
maintain, but improve the facility,
said Secretary June Fothergill.
It is hoped the entrance way and
cloakroom can be upgraded, she
said.
"It is a good day out," said Trea-
surer Reta Kelland.
Though hall renovations are their
main focus, Kelland said the group
also collects for the food bank or
other activities which relate to
seniors.
The 40-member club holds
recruitment in November and is
looking for new people over the
age of 50 to participate.
Those new members might be
very interested in competing in the
seniors' games which take place
each June, said Kelland.
"The Happy Gang always sends
representatives, usually in euchre,
crokinole, carpet bowling, bridge
and cribbage," Kelland said. An
entrant for the swim meet has not
yet been found.
At the regular gathering,
Fothergill said the members enjoy a
potluck lunch then play cards until
4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. There arc occa-
sions when they host guest speak-
ers, enjoy entertainment or ,take
pleasure in school children attend-
ing to perform.
"It is a good square meal," said
Kelland. "There is always a lot of
food and it brings us together."
Mary Peel is the president of the
Londesboro Happy Gang Seniors.
Anyone interested in the Happy
Gang should considering joining
now as the Christmas dinner is
being held today, Nov. 25.
Though a smaller group at only
35, Blyth seniors gather at Blyth
Memorial Hall, on the fourth
Wednesday of each month for a
smorgasbord, entertainment and
socializing.
"Everyone takes something," said
member Mary Walden. "There is
quite the assortment."
After a filling meal, those gath-
ered recall memories through a
sing-a-long. A business meeting is
followed with cards, speakers,
slides or entertainment.
The small group is unable to do a
lot of charitable work outside their
own needs but they do plan bus
trips annually. as well as enjoy pic-
nics at Blyth Lions Park.
They too, are planning a special
catered Christmas dinner for this
Wednesday which Walden said the
women like. "They don't have to
minimal yearly fee as well as con-
tributions for special events.
That annual fee supports the
United Senior Citizens of Ontario
(USCO) organization, a political
voice which addresses the govern-
ment on issues vital to seniors.
