HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAUREEN Love family & friends By Ashley Gropp On the night of Nov. 16, the ...And Perhaps a Play Theatre Company set out to prove a point with the opening of their first play, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) at The Garage Theatre in Blyth. This theatre group wanted to prove that teenagers are capable of highly skilled theatre, and did a better job than some may have expected. The Company is made up entirely of teenagers. From the position of president, (Daryle Henry), to tickets, programs and poster design, teenagers run the show, and (surprising to some, I'm sure) it's great entertainment. Their hard work and dedication has obviously paid off, as the actors had the audience laughing hysterically. The Complete Works was directed by Mike Mullen and Cappy Onn. Under their guidance, the cast's talent blossomed. Although, I'm uncertain how much of the comedy came from the script and how much came from their leadership, it seemed apparent through their confident performances that much of it was brought out through their own ideas. The cast of Nathan Sherred, Henry, Heather Sande, Kendra Folkhard, Robin Wong and Briana Brown were full of energy—of which it took a lot to perform such a piece—seemingly enjoyed every minute and involved crew and audience alike into their world of 'twisted' Shakespeare. Never has Shakespearean tragedy been so tragically performed with such humorous results. The intentional overacting, as well as the unbelievable twists put into the play served to create the mood necessary to laugh at the events of which the Bard wrote. Somehow, sitting in The Garage, Romeo and Juliet, and many other great tragedies were reduced to crude jokes. The play is self-mocking right from the opening, and this ability to CAPITOL KED TWIN CINEMA SURROUND SOUND STEREO LISTOWEI, 291-3070 STARTS FRIDAY CINEMA 1 7 P.M. Death scenes became boisterous comedy, as opposed to the dreary emotional moments that they are usually portrayed as. Only rarely did the action seem to drag, something that happens in virtually any play, movie, or television show. All around the show is great. Artistic Director Erin Roulston made an excellent choice for pure entertainment value and to showcase the talents of the capable young actors. The play appeals to most ages, although the easily offended and the very young probably will not want to attend. Even skeptics of the Company should full-heartedly agree after seeing the show that a bunch of kids are capable of running a Company and coming up with pleasing results.
